Berwick Speedway: Cock O' the North indeed......

Having now completed big Premier League wins over all their northern rivals (Newcastle, Redcar, Workington, Glasgow and Edinburgh) Berwick’s speedway Bandits – sponsored by A & J Scott at Wooperton – now find their beaten northern rivals queuing up for a second bite at the cherry!

“We had a great night, winning at Workington on Monday,” said club boss John Anderson.

“That’s a track we always take pleasure in doing well at – and it is likely we’ll be facing those Comets again before the end of October in the Young Shield play-offs.

“In addition, this coming Friday we’ve been invited up to Edinburgh, where their Monarchs (who seem likely to finish on top of the nationwide Premier League) still refuse to accept that the Bandits are currently the best team in the north!

“Last week at Armadale, their promoter John Campbell went on their public address system and was frankly dismissive of our having beaten his table-toppers on aggregate last month, to say nothing of our Bandits having inflicted on them the biggest beating Edinburgh have taken in the League all year!

“So, we’re going to prove which of the teams is indeed currently Cock o’ The North!

“We will race at Edinburgh this Friday 3rd (our guest reserve will be Newcastle Scot Derek Sneddon) and they will return to Shielfield on Saturday, September 25th – after which, we expect Mr Campbell to accept the fact of our current superiority.”

Berwick’s superiority is being fuelled largely by the arrival of “Magic Marcin” Rempala, the brilliant Polish prince of riders, who is currently winning race after race for the Bandits.

“Marcin is a great wee guy, as well as an exceptional speedway rider,” agreed team manager Ian Rae – who has seen his side suffer only one defeat out of eight matches since taking over leadership at the end of July.

“If we could have had him here earlier in the year we might have even higher up the League than we are (Bandits are currently equal 6th) but right now, we’re looking ahead, not back!”

Rae’s warriors have another battle on their hands at Shielfield Park on Saturday, when another northern club returns in an attempt to regain some bragging rights after having been beaten home and away by the Bandits.

“We have Redcar coming to town again, captained by former World Champion Gary Havelock,” said a Berwick spokesperson last night.

“In addition, the Bears have drafted in Elite League rider Stuart Robson and the young Australian Aaron Summers to boost their chances – despite our proud record against the northern teams, we’ll have to be at our best again on Saturday!

“We will also have a guest on board, and will announce the name as soon as all the details of his riding in our colours are sorted out.”

In addition to the first-class speedway racing on offer, Shielfield Park will be a fun place to be on Saturday, with the club offering free entry to all accompanied children for a Family Fun Night, featuring a bouncy castle and many other children’s attractions.
