The Newcastle Diamonds’ sat comfortably in second place having carried on where they left off the night before at Glasgow by hitting the Tigers hard.
Early race winners Kenny Larsen and Dakota North, who’s heat two win was in his fastest time ever round Brough Park, put the Diamonds 8-4 up yesterday evening after the opening two races.
A cruel engine failure for Rene Bach in Heat Three prevented the Diamonds taking the first 5-1 of the night, but a superb win, way out in front, for Derek Sneddon who maintained a balance in the 3-3.
A huge crash caused by all four riders going for the same point on the track on the first bend of race four saw Josh Grajczonek, the heaviest faller, needing medical treatment but came out for the re-run and took a solid second in another 4-2 as Newcastle moved up to 15-9 ahead, but for the Aussie the fall took the wind out of his sails as he remained subdued throughout the rest of the match.
The Larsen / Sneddon road-roller continued its crushing journey effectively in the sixth with another dominant maximum, but a tactical ride for Travis McGowan for double points in the seventh could only muster a transformed two to four in a 4-all to keep Newcastle 10 ahead 27-17.
Sneddon took another excellent win in Heat eight with Adam McKinna stunning the crowd to come back inside Glasgow skipper Lee Dicken on lap two in a fine 5-1 with the Diamonds now 14-up, which moved on to 42-20 after another Heat 10 5-1.
Glasgow’s guest Kevin Wolbert of Edinburgh took a massive win in Heat 11 as a tactical double for six points to Newcastle’s three well ahead of Lemon but Newcastle were still comfortably 45-26 up.
Heat 13 came to a first bend halt with the two Tigers, Wolbert and Jake Anderson crashing into each other and hitting the deck before they’d even reached the turn with the referee calling all four back for a re-run which hit another maximum Newcastle’s way as the prospective thumping became official.
A dominant Diamond conclusion gave them a very well deserved 29-point victory and a comfortable second place in the Premier League.
George English said: “We know we’re unlikely to get the better of the leaders, Edinburgh now, but we are fully intent of holding this second place and making a real mark in the Play offs for the Elite League challenge - and if we make it to that then the top flight side had better watch out!”
