The Jotun Paints Scunthorpe Saints were beaten 50-43 by the Buxton Hitmen on Bank Holiday Monday and most of the damage was done by 16-year old sensation Jason Garrity.
He was beaten by a Saints’ rider on just one occasion in seven rides as he registered seventeen points (plus three bonus points for following home a team-mate). He joined former Scorpion Simon Lambert (covering for Craig Cook) for a 5-1 in heat 1 and the Hitmen held a narrow advantage throughout the meeting before he joined Robert Branford his side’s fourth maximum heat advantage to secure victory in heat 14.
It looked ominous for the Saints after four races with the Hitmen having provided all four race winners but Steve Worrall produced an outstanding ride to defeat Simon Lambert in heat 5 before his twin brother, Richie, who was making his home debut joined Gary Irving for 5-1 over Jonathan Bethell (the second former Scunthorpe rider) and Robert Branford in heat 7 to bring the scores to within two points.
Sadly that was as close as it got with Garrity combining with Adam Allott (the third former Scunthorpe rider) for a 5-1 in heat 8. The pair looked to repeat the dose in heat 9 but Steve Worrall beat them convincingly before Mark Burrows, mounted on a Viktor Bergström bike, won heat 10. Steve Worrall just failed to split the Hitmen pairing of Garrity and Bethell in heat 12 before heats 13 and 15 produced two of the finest speedway races. Mark Burrows was on a tactical ride in heat 13 and he along with Gary Irving fought their way around Simon Lambert before Lambert managed to re-pass Irving on the last lap. It was breath-taking stuff and the 7-2 gave the Saints a real chance of victory.
However, to achieve that Jason Garrity was going to have to be beaten in heat 14. Benji Compton, who had announced that the race would be his last in the sport, and Richie Worrall were charged with the task but as the Hitmen pair shot from the tapes Compton’s bike ground to a halt. It was a disappointing way to end his career but many at the Eddie Wright Raceway will have a special place in their hearts for the West Yorkshire lad who scored 993 points in 124 meetings for the club.
With the meeting won heat 15 was just a formality but no one told the riders. 46-year old Mark ‘Buzz’ Burrows rode as though his life depended on it. The lead swapped between him and Simon Lambert throughout the race whilst Steve Worrall was in close contention and as the finishing line loomed the proverbial blanket could be thrown over the three of them. It was a fitting end to a fine speedway meeting and there is little doubt that along with the Premier League meeting before it the thirty heats proved to be outstanding value for money. The home fans might have witnessed two home defeats but they could perhaps console themselves with the quality of racing on offer and seeing some outstanding young talent do battle in the National League meeting. The Jotun Paints Scunthorpe Saints are next in action on Friday 10th September against the Newport Hornets (7.30pm start) whilst the next speedway racing at the Eddie Wright Raceway will see the Premier League Scorpions take on Glasgow this Friday (3rd September, 7.30pm start) when Joe Screen, Travis McGowan, josh Grajczonek and Nick Morris will be in their side.
