Stoke East Rider Potters crashed to a 61-31 defeat against the Rye House Rockets in the Premier League at a sunny and dusty Hoddesdon Raceway on Monday afternoon.
Home skipper Chris Neath and number one Linus Sundstrom went through the meeting unbeaten as the Potters relied heavily on Lee Smart and reserve Lubos Tomicek.
The Easy Rider Potters went behind in the opening heat after Frank Facher suffered an engine failure on the first turn with Stefan Ekberg and Linus Sundstrom taking maximum points over Lee Smart who was overhauled by Sundstrom at the end of the second lap. Rye House extended their lead in the next two heats as Ekberg and former Potter Robbie Kessler gained a 5-1 over Ben Wilson and Taylor Poole in heat three and then home skipper Chris Neath and Kyle Hughes combine for a 4-2 over Lubos Tomicek who was overhauled by Neath off the fourth turn of the first lap, as the Potters trail 17-7 after four heats.
The Rockets continued to pressure the Potters and gained a second successive 4-2 from Sundstrom and Kessler but Sundstrom was made to work hard for the victory after Lee Smart led the way until the home straight when the Rockets number one cut back off the final turn to take victory on the line. Ekberg and Sundstrom continued to add to the Potters misery as they gained maximum points over Jeremia Thelaus and Potters skipper Ricky Wells as the Potters trail by sixteen points after six heats as they are left with a mountain to climb to get back into the meeting. The Potters fall further behind as the Rockets gain a 4-2 advantage in heat seven as the race was awarded after Ben Wilson fell while in third place behind partner Taylor Poole and race leader Neath, Rockets reserve Paul Starke doing well to lay his bike down to miss the fallen Wilson, Stoke trail 30-12 at the halfway stage of the meeting.
Easy Rider Potters team manager Malcolm Vasey nominated Lubos Tomicek as a tactical ride in heat eight but the move failed as Ekberg and Kyle Hughes take maximum points over Smart and Tomicek. A further 4-2 for the Rockets as Neath took a comfortable victory from Wells who passed Kessler at the end of the first lap with Thelaus just fails to catch Kessler who holds on to third to extend the Rockets lead to twenty four points. Stoke’s woes continue as Wilson is caught napping at the start and misses the gate as Stefan Ekberg and Linus Sundstrom take their third maximum heat win as a partnership as the Potters trail 44-16 after ten heats.
Lee Smart is nominated as a tactical ride in heat eleven as the Potters gain their first heat advantage of the afternoon despite Chris Neath taking the chequered flag ahead of Smart and his partner Facher for a Stoke 5-3 heat advantage. Ben Wilson and Ricky Wells gain Stoke’s second heat advantage on the bounce gaining a 4-2 over Kessler and Hughes but the Potters trail 49-25 after twelve races.
Frank Facher goes through the Hoddesdon safety face and thankfully walks away from the incident which happened after Neath dived up the inside of the German rider causing him to lose control and fall. In the rerun the Rockets pairing take a comfortable 5-1. Taylor Poole is then excluded in heat fourteen as Poole and Paul Starke battle for second place Poole coming to grief entering the first turn on the second lap. In the rerun Lubos Tomicek took the chequered flag ahead of Starke and Kessler for a drawn heat.
Rye House round the meeting off with a 4-2 from Sundstrom and Ekberg over Smart and Tomicek as Smart ruins Ekberg’s maximum hopes as the Rockets take a thirty point victory over the Potters.
Stoke promoter Dave Tattum said “We were beaten by the better team on the day we were a two man team with Lee Smart and Lubos Tomicek keeping us in the hunt, Rye House is a trick track and with essentially four of our riders not having even seen the place prior to today it was always going to be difficult. I do feel we could have done with a meeting under our belts after a two week lay off due to the weather with the new riders having come in as we looked a team of individuals and we then had Frank suffer the loss of a chain in the opening heat which wrecked his number one bike he then wrote his second bike off after he went through the fence in his final ride, Taylor has also got a major rebuild on his bike also after he also went into the fence. I do feel Jeremia was on the pace in his rides and feel that he will settle down and do a good job for us, but Rye House is not the place you really want to make your debut on with the tricks there are to the Hoddesdon circuit.”
Rye House 61: Stefan Ekberg 16, Chris Neath 15, Linus Sundstrom 14+4, Robbie Kessler 7+2, Kyle Hughes 6+1, Paul Starke 3, Jordan Frampton (Rider Replacement)
Stoke 31: Lee Smart 10, Lubos Tomicek 7, Ricky Wells 4+1, Ben Wilson 4, Taylor Poole 3, Jeremia Thelaus 2, Frank Facher 1+1
