The Newcastle Diamonds’ charge to regain a top three status in the Premier League hinged upon a good performance at the Glasgow Tigers on Sunday afternoon.
After a stunning Heat one maximum for Kenni Larsen and Derek Sneddon to put the Diamonds four up, Heat Three brought the visitors down to earth with a bump, literally for the skipper Jason King who fell heavily on the first lap and was in obvious pain from a left knee injury which ended his afternoons racing before he’d completed one lap.
Josh Grajczonek took the4 fourth over Mark Lemon and with new Tiger Jake Anderson holding Adam McKinna at the rear the 4-2 levelled the match at 12-12.
The productive Larsen and Sneddon partnership hit another fine and well battled 5-1 when Travis McGowan found he only had the wide line left on bend one which sent him visibly backwards with the Diamonds going in front again 16-20.
Heats six and seven where shared 3-apiece, but the latter saw a second Newcastle rider bite the dust with McKinna going down on lap two when at the back, although thankfully the rider just recently back from breaking his neck was fit to continue with the score at 19-23.
Sneddon continued his extraordinary afternoon’s work with a barnstorming win in the eighth race with his partner Dakota North, who enjoyed a superb meeting, keeping his fellow Aussie, Anderson under complete control in third for another Newcastle maximum to put the rampant Diamonds 20-28 up.
North blew the stadium to bits with a dominant win in the ninth when the youngster held off every challenge former Elite League star McGowan could throw at him with ease for a well earned three points in a Diamond 2-4 who were now 10 up.
Joe Screen was nominated as a tactical ride in the 10th for double points, but went way too wide on bend one, almost riding up the safety fence yet still took second down the back straight only to do the same again on the fourth and crash out of the race which was re-run without the former Elite League man who was then also withdrawn with slight concussion.
Rene Bach and North romped to a big 1-5 in the re-run to put their side 23-37 up going into Heat 11 which gave Larsen and easy win but Grajczonek became the first Tiger to defeat Sneddon who was restricted to third in the 2-4 as the Newcastle road-roller trundled on to 25-41.
Grajczonek was nominated as the Tigers’ second tactical ride in Heat 13 in a last-ditch attempt to save face but with Larsen out in front and Lemon scooting under him there was no doubling of scores in yet another Newcastle 1-5 as they moved to 20-points up with two races to go.
The final two heats were incidental to Newcastle taking all four league points from a superb 16-point victory.
“We’re right back on track now,” stated George English, Newcastle’s team manager, “and this four points today, coupled hopefully with another three on Monday will knock us back into the top three at least. Today was a good result and we’re only hoping Jason King won’t be too badly hurt and will take his place in the side for the return.”
