Berwick Speedway: Bandits recover well after slow start to overwhelm Comets over final six races.

Berwick’s A & J Scott-sponsored Bandits whopping 24-point victory (which projected them into equal 6th in the current Premier League) over the Workington Comets may, on he face of it, seem an easy victory… To those of that impression, please think again.

Workington can, generally, ride Shielfield Park with a good deal of accomplishment and as the rejuvenated, and thrilling Rusty Harrison jetted from the gate in Heat Thee to take a massive win with Andre Compton adding two more to the Comets’ tally in their 1-5 to put their visiting side into the lead 7-11.

Chris Schramm’s expertise round Berwick came to the fore in Heat Four as he followed in Harrison’s steel-shoe prints to take a big gate to flag victory, but a fall for Berwick’s guest from Glasgow, the usually steady Lee Dicken, handed a 2-4 to the Comets who went up 9-15 as things looked threatening for the beleaguered Bandits.

Michal Makovsky returned to form just at the right time for his beloved side roasting the outside line to pass Harrison on bend two and hold onto the three points to the end, and with skipper Paul Clews taking full advantage of Craig Cook’s complete incompatibility with Shielfield Park for a point the Bandits pulled the Comets two back with the score at 13-17.

Marcin Rempala enjoyed yet another barnstorming match to record a second consecutive home paid maximum, but learned a lesson in Heat Six – don’t slow too much on the run to the flag as he nearly lost points to the vibrant Schramm who had been chasing Adrian Rymel who himself was left with no option but to swoop at speed under his own partner off bend four to make sure he wasn’t overhauled too, but the 5-1 was won and the match was levelled 18-all.

Schramm passed Lee Complin on bend one but the Bandit found a patch of grip and a throttle-full of power to squeeze round the soaring Comet’s outside line off bend two in a move on fast-forward, and with Jade Mudgway fending off Compton throughout the home side were in the lead by two, but it had taken them seven races to achieve.

Still only two up after Heat Nine Rymel and Rempala kindled the final thrust from the Bandits making a pair of lightening gates and blow away Compton and Kenny Ingalls in a maximum 5-1 and push Berwick’s lead to six.

That turned into eight in Heat 11, but only just as Mudgway rode a wild rodeo of a race nearly losing it several times but held third for a point with Complin just clinging on when a huge error nearly lost him the lead on bend two in the eventual 4-2 to put the Bandits 37-29 up with four races left.

Heat 12 presented Berwick with an awarded 5-1 when Ingalls got into all sorts of bother going into bend one on the final lap, falling heavily into the fence boards, punching a hole in one with his footrest, which agonisingly still had his foot resting on it resulting in a suspected ankle break for which he was taken off to hospital for immediate exploratory treatment.

Rymel and Complin hit another five past the struggling Cook and the fallen Schramm, with Makovsky passing Compton on bend two of heat 14 followed by an astonishingly hard outside pass from Mudgway round the same rider, taking a sharp left to dent any thoughts of the Comet making a comeback up the Bandit’s inside line in another 5-1 to put the home side 52-32 up.

The final race Rymel took another big win with Rempala completing his paid maximum following the Czech home in second to give Berwick a deceptively large margin of victory.

Ian Rae, Berwick’s team manager, enjoying a remarkable run of team form, was as expected a satisfied man, saying: “I have to admit to being a little concerned early on with the Comets opening up that early and convincing  lead which made us all think they had the fire power to take a win, but once the lads got to grips with things they proved their desire to win still rings loud, strong and long and again our team spirit lifted as the Comets found no answers to battle back late on. It was another team performance to get a lot of pride from.”
