Eastbourne Speedway: Eagles looking for revenge

Sussex Speedway squad, Eastbourne ‘Lifestyle’ Eagles will be hoping that revenge will indeed prove to be a dish best served cold as they return to Arlington stadium (7.30 p.m. parade, 7.45 p.m. first race) this Thursday evening, when bolt on Elite League Play Off Qualifiers and likely looking section Runner’s Up, the Wolverhampton Wolves make their return visit to the Sussex countryside.

Following the disappointment of last week’s sabbatical as the Eagles Management took the decision to postpone the scheduled Knockout Cup contest against the Lakeside Hammers, hopes remain high that the Sussex outfit can pick up just where they left off as Elite League activity resumes with the club looking to make it seven consecutive victories around their home circuit.

Reluctance to field a less than full strength team for the Cup match fuelled the Management’s decision to put back Lakeside’s visit, Tomasz Jedrzejak’s involvement in a rearranged Polish League fixture meaning that Eagles would face the Hammers without a facility to cover the Pole’s absence proving a key factor. However, although Lukas Dryml, along with Jedrzejak is set to make a return to the side, the Czech Republican now having suitably recovered from a viral infection that has laid him low in recent weeks, the inclusion of number one Matej Zagar again remains shrouded in doubt as the Monmore Green outfit prepare to make their visit on Thursday.

The Slovenian reportedly picked up a further injury in Poland on Sunday and a late decision will be made as to whether he returns the helm of the Eagles septet to head of the offensive. Should, as seems likely, Zagar not take his place, the Sussex club would at least be granted a facility as cover, the smart money seeming to suggest that former Eagle Edward Kennett, who served them so well in a similar role in the home victory over the Poole Pirates recently will be the man to step into his shoes.

Only the best will do of course if the Sussex side are to extend their impressive home sequence that now stands at six matches by beating a side, rich in talent and one very much on a high form wise, particularly after their own defeat of those same Pirates by a 50-40 margin at Wolverhampton on Monday night.

Indeed, the Eastbourne contingent will need no reminder that it was in fact the Wolves who were the last visiting team to emerge victorious from Arlington, a rather humbling experience in mid June, a night that saw the hosts succumb to an eventually narrow looking 48-45 defeat, but fifteen heats that had previously seen them face a 14-point deficit, the Wolves starting by far the stronger and opening up a 22-8 lead after only five races.

The Eagles hit back hard, a 7-2 with Zagar, who proved a chief mover and shaker on that occasion, prompting the fight back, however a further Wolves 5-1 a few more races in put the brakes on the Eastbourne ambition and although it was the Sussex septet who looked the better side over the final few heats, sufficient at least to claim an Elite League point from what had previously appeared a fruitless cause, they ultimately they couldn’t prevent the visitors running out three-point winners.

Certainly revenge will be on the minds of all involved from the Sussex side of the pits as Eastbourne bid to continue their winning streak in their penultimate home league fixture, a sustained home run surely serving to raise confidence levels ahead of their assault for Cup honours, the match up with Lakeside now looking set to go ahead at the latter part of September.

Once again, supporters are reminded that the club’s summer ‘Kids for a Quid’ offer, in collaboration with the Argus Newspaper will still be in operation for the return visit of the Wolves to the Sussex Countryside.

To re-iterate, special dated vouchers printed in the Thursday edition of the Argus will entitle children less than 12 years of age, when accompanied by an adult to be admitted to the stadium for the price of just a pound, as before, the newspaper containing the vouchers will be available to buy outside the turnstiles on the night of the match enabling all in attendance to take advantage of the offer.
