Poole Castle Cover Pirates pushed their closest rivals, Wolverhampton, all the way in this top of the table clash before going down by 10 points.
The loss, whilst reducing the points difference between the top two sides to 17 will have no bearing on the final placings with the Pirates guaranteed top spot.
But in much the same way as Wolverhampton raised eyebrows at Wimborne Road last Wednesday so the Pirates caused more than a few problems for a Wolves side that like Poole maintains a 100% home record. It was a performance that on the whole pleased Poole boss Matt Ford who said "We lived with them for much of the meeting but we just couldn't find the killer punch when we needed it, but perhaps this will give us some confidence should we meet Wolves in the play-offs. Chris (Holder) just couldn't get going early on and Leon (Madsen) had one of those nights but can still learn from the experience. Once again I was more than pleased with the preformance that Jason (Doyle) delivered, a further confidence boost for him just at the right time."
Masterminding the Pirates assault were Darcy Ward, paid 12, and Jason Doyle 8 as Chris Holder and Leon Madsen struggled in the early stages to get any points themselves on the board. Holder came back strong in his final two rides to finish on 5 points - matched by Pedersen and Mroczka - and give the Pirates some hope of clinching a league point from the encounter but an unbeaten performance from Freddie Lindgren and a captain's innings from Tai Woffinden kept the the Wolves on the right course to protect their home record.
But the 'killer blow' came when 2009 Pirate Adam Skornicki, on his return from injury, made a splendid start in heat 12 to lead Bjarne Pedersen whilst Doyle, with two previous wins under his belt and a controversial 15 metre penalty in his third outing having handicapped him, suffered bike problem and retired early from the heat. Wolves' reserve Ludwig Lindgren 'limped' home for a vital point from a heat that the Pirates were looking to at least draw level from. Their other reserve Matthew Wethers then made a storming start in heat 14 leaving Woffinden, in sparkling form all night, the task of joining him at the front to seal the victory and leave Poole requiring a heat advantage in the final heat - which was always going to feature Freddie Lindgren and Tai Woffinden - to gain that consolation point.
Ward battled hard and made Lindgren work for his maximum but the Pirates conceded their 8th 4-2 of the night to lose by 10. Poole Speedway can confirm that there will be NO MEETING at Wimborne Road on Wednesday 25th August, hopes of re-staging one of the rained-off Bournemouth Buccaneers fixtures has not materialised due to rider availability, so the next racing at Wimborne Road will be on Wednesday September 1st when Peterborough visit in Poole's final home league match, ahead of the championship-determining play-offs
