After the success speedway has had in Sweden over the years with the amazing Tony Rickardsson, Sweden has been looking for the next rider to step up and to attempt to fill the void left by the 7 time champ.
Andreas Jonsson seemed to be the natural successor. Showing so much promise and with 4 GP wins under his belt, big things were expected of the Bydgoszcz rider this season.
2010 has been poor by his high standards. A third place in Gothenburg in front of his home fans has been his best result. Torun, was a nightmare result for the 29 year old and unfortunately, Cardiff proved to be an utter disaster with AJ scoring just two points and finishing last on the night.
Hopes were high for a big night for AJ at his home round in Sweden. His Swedish club Dackarna were hosting the GP and he went into the meeting as one of the favourites on home soil. It wasn’t going to be a classic night for him though. He picked up 7 points on the night which was an improvement on recent GP’s but not the dramatic change in fortunes he would have hoped for.
AJ shared his thoughts after the meeting “I am pleased my bikes were working well. I made a few mistakes during the meeting but I can take positives from this GP considering my recent form in the series.”
Picking up the seven points, AJ has now progressed to 8th in the standings, just 1 point ahead of his Swedish rival, Freddie Lindgren. With 4 GPs still to race, there is plenty of time for AJ and his team to turn this around and capitalise on scoring more points. The finale of the series is held at his home track Bydgoszcz, so he will be expecting a large haul of points in front of his loyal supporters.
Jonsson has had a lot of responsibility on his shoulders for his Polish side as they have been without Russian star Emil Sayfutdinov for a large part of the season. After his fellow Bydgoszcz star returned to the saddle in the GP, disaster struck when Gollob crashed into the youngster and Emil was left with a broken wrist. AJ and his Polish team now face a fierce relegation battle with Czestochowa to remain in the top flight of Polish speedway. Just a bit more pressure on the Swede’s shoulders to deal with…
AJ still has his fellow Swedes behind him in the table and will want to make sure he finishes ahead of them for pride and to make sure he maintains a top 8 place position to make sure he qualifies for the 2011 GP series.
