After several days of rain, which left half the Czech Republic flooded, it all looked uncertain for round 5 of the International Mefo Sport Flat track Cup 2010. But on race day the sun came out just in time.
Everyone pitched in with shovels and brooms to get rid of the puddles and after three hours practice was on! American speedway star and Czech resident Harold Hartke reconnected with his roots, sporting a very graceful flat track style. Local man Jan Vondrasek was in good form and promised a strong showing.
We welcomed back the Bavarian boys Helly Kaltenhauser and Andreas Perr. Stefan Gatzenmeier kept his usual low profile and let his riding do the talking. Massimo Bruni was sporting his new go-faster leathers and ran out of track on several occasions during the day. Also new from Italy was the Indian spirited Alberto Vitangeli.
Tom van Nes experienced technical problems and had to revert to his monstrous 1200 Harley-Davidson twin. Mick Jansen had a cracked fuel tank and had to jump on his backup bike which left Harold Hartke without a ride. W&W rider Thomas Weigl was going well and had great battles with Perr and Vitangeli. Marco Belli and Jan-Willem Jansen were banging handlebars all day long. Come the final it was Belli who made the hole shot followed by Gatzenmeier, Mick Jansen, JW Jansen, Weigl, Vondrasek, Perr, Bruni, Vitangeli, van Nes, Kaltenhauser.
By lap two Bruni was seventh, Weigl had dropped to eight and JW Jansen was second. Mick Jansen was battling with Gatzenmeier, Bruni was catching up with Vondrasek and Weigl, Perr and Vitangeli kept challenging each other for the remaining 13 laps. JW Jansen had caught up with Belli and together they pulled away from the rest of the field. Bruni ran out of track again while in fourth place, finishing his race in the air fence.
On lap 11 Belli's motor wasn't giving 100% anymore and JW Jansen got past and took the win. Marco Belli still managed second and it seemed his carburetor was about to fall off! Mick Jansen had past Gatzenmeier and came third.
The track had developed a nice wide groove and produced another great day of flat track racing in Bohemia!
