A dramatic last race 5-1 from Linus Sundstrom and Jordan Frampton secured the Silver Ski Rockets a tremendous match point at the home of the League leaders.
To put that result into additional perspective, the Monarchs have now lost just once in fifteen starts in the League this season – bizarrely at home to King’s Lynn, a side they walloped by 22 points on the road in the Cup this week!
All in all, it was a remarkable result for the Rockets, who were additionally handicapped by the late withdrawal of Robbie Kessler and the delayed arrival of captain Chris Neath. Kessler sustained a foot injury ahead of the meeting while practicing on his trials bike, necessitating the use of Glasgow’s John Branney as a guest. Neath and team manager John Sampford, meanwhile, were snarled up in serious motorway delays and did not arrive until Heat 2, too late for Neath to take his opening ride.
The Rye captain channelled his frustration into a solid 7 points from his three remaining outings, and this together with telling contributions from Jordan Frampton and Linus Sundstrom helped steer the Rockets back from a 31-17 deficit after Heat 8. Frampton’s 6 points from a Tactical ride in Heat 9 closed the deficit by 4 points, and a 5-1 from Sundstrom and Kyle Hughes in Heat 11 brought the score to 37-31.
Hopes of an outright comeback ended with a Monarchs maximum in Heat 14, but Sundstrom and Frampton made sure of a match point by outgating Matthew Wethers and the previously unbeaten Ryan Fisher in the finale.
A proud John Sampford summed up the Rockets’ post-match jubilation. “It was a superb effort by the boys, absolutely brilliant. To be 14 points down at one stage, and then come back and get a match point at the home of the champions elect, is simply fantastic.
“The boys were determined to get back to their best form after last week’s (62-32) hammering at Workington, and they made up for that result in a big, big way tonight.
“We just hope we can keep that momentum going to pick up more points at Berwick tomorrow (Saturday) and Glasgow on Sunday. We will have Sheffield’s Pepe Franc as a guest at Berwick tomorrow – he is a former Bandit and if he can score half the paid 15 he managed against us tonight as a guest for Kalle Katajisto that will be a big start.
“The averages then change, with the August Green Sheets effective from Sunday. With Robbie (Kessler) coming into the main body of the team and Kyle Hughes dropping to reserve, we’ll be using Rider-Replacement at Glasgow.”
