18-year old Steve Worrall highlighted just how far he has progressed by scoring thirteen points for the Jotun Paints Scunthorpe Saints at Wolverhampton last night.
The Saints went down 62-32 to the Dudley Heathens but Worrall improved as the night went on and ended the night by defeating the vastly experienced Jon Armstrong to win heat 15. There is no doubt that Team Manager Stuart Parnaby could have coerced a few more points out of his side but, with one eye firmly on the future, he also gave all four rider replacement rides to Worrall’s twin brother Richie, who undoubtedly benefitted from the experience.
Whilst the result was never in doubt after the Heathens registered consecutive 5-1s in heat 8, 9 and 10 there was some good racing, not least from Mark ‘Buzz’ Burrows who was involved in terrific tussles with Tom Perry and former Saint Ashley Morris. He eventually lost to the former in heat 5 but re-passed Morris on the last bend of heat 11. Morris was then involved with another great battle with Gary Irving for the lead in heat 14 until Irving fell at the start of lap three. The Saints camp felt Morris had caused him to fall but referee Chris Durno didn’t agree. It marked the end of a disappointing night for Irving who had looked good all night. His gating has improved recently and he was quick on track but on a night when he could easily have scored eight or nine points he finished with just three, scant reward for his efforts.
The Saints are back on track at the Eddie Wright Raceway on Friday night (30th July, 7.30pm) when they take on title-contenders, the Buxton Hitmen, complete with Craig Cook, Nick Morris, Robert Branford and former Scunthorpe riders Jonathan Bethell and Adam Allott.
Steven Worrall: I enjoyed tonight, it was good. I liked the track the first time I came and I think it's one of my favourite tracks to be honest. I saw Lee Smart use the grippy patch on the inside turn 2 in his first race and then I tried to do the same. Life in the Premier League is doing me good as I've never felt so confident as I have done tonight. So obviously it's building up my confidence and I think it's really bringing me on, even though I've not scored a lot so far.

Jotun Paints Scunthorpe Saints 32 – Mark Burrows 7 (4 rides, including a four point tactical ride), Gary Beaton 2+1 (4), Gary Irving 3 (4), Scott Richardson 2 (4), Steve Worrall 13 (5 rides including a four point tactical ride), Ashley Birks 4 (5), Richie Worrall 1+1 (4)
