Last night the Henderson Insurance Scunthorpe Scorpions’ Tero Aarnio represented Finland in the World Team Cup at King’s Lynn and, despite being the only rider who competes in the Premier League, was competitive all night and recorded two points.
“It was good, especially that I wasn’t far off the pace. I actually felt that I was challenging all the time and I hadn’t had any time to prepare. So hopefully some Elite League teams will have noticed because I am really keen to be doubling-up in that league”.
“I know that if I ride against these riders just once a year then I am never going to be at that level. I’m not that far off but I know that if I race them regularly I can start to beat them. It is always an honour to represent your country but I am just disappointed that I wasn’t selected in the first place and was just a reserve. Hopefully, I showed I should have been there to start with”.
In an exciting meeting it was Great Britain who edged through to the final after defeating Australia, Sweden and Finland. Great Britain included former Scorpion, Tai Woffinden, in their five man team and, despite a heavy fall in his third outing, he claimed seven points from his five rides.
The second and third place teams, Australia and Sweden, will now join Denmark and Russia in Thursday’s race-off at Vojens in Denmark with the top two joining group winners, Poland and Great Britain”.
Great Britain 51 – Scott Nicholls 14, Chris Harris 13, Lee Richardson 10, Tai Woffinden & Simon Stead 7
Australia 48 – Chris Holder, Davey Watt & Troy Batchelor 11, Darcy Ward 10, Rory Schlein 6
Sweden 40 – Freddie Lindgren & Jonas Davidsson 14, Antonio Lindback 6, Magnus Zetterstrom 5, Daniel Nermark 1
Finland 14 – Joonas Kylmakorpi 9, Tero Aarnio & Juha Hautamaki 2, Kauko Nieminen 1, Timo Lahti 0.
Tonight the focus switches to the Jotun Paints Scunthorpe Saints as they travel to Wolverhampton to take on Dudley. Unfortunately rider replacement will operate for the unavailable Benji Compton whilst Richie Worrall will once again wear the number eight race jacket:
1. Mark Burrows, 2. Rider Replacement, 3. Gary Beaton, 4. Gary Irving, 5. Scott Richardson, 6. Steve Worrall, 7. Ashley Birks, 8. Richie Worrall.
