Speedway returns to Shielfield Park this Saturday with the A & J Scott-sponsored Bandits hoping to provide supporters with a big win over the visiting Rye House Rockets.
But the team will have to achieve their hoped-for success without Dave Peet who has been the club’s speedway and race-night team manager since late in 2008.
With Bandits’ new board following the avowed policy of keeping supporters informed of matters relative to the club’s destiny, it was announced yesterday that Peet would be departing, with team management duties being taken up by track curator and staff manger Ian Rae.
Rae’s association with speedway in Berwick-upon-Tweed extend back to his role as Stadium Manager at their Berrington Lough Stadium, followed by several years – up until 2001 – as team manager, the role he will again assume on Saturday.
“Ian is familiar with team management, and is obviously aware of the capabilities of all our riders” said a Berwick spokesman. “But he has a hard act to follow”.
“I cannot emphasise how much Lynda Waite – who also stepped down from her role with the promoting company this week – and I benefitted from Dave’s knowledge and experience since we took over this club” said Bandits’ owner John Anderson last night.
“Neither of us had any real experience in speedway administration, and Dave guided us wisely in so many ways. However, at this point in time and with the club now moving in a different direction it was agreed we should come to the parting of the ways”.
Anderson admitted that, while he personally still has no great inside knowledge of the sport, he can call on over 100 years of experience at anytime.
“In addition to Ian Rae’s twenty-plus years, I am learning every day from Dennis McCleary, who does so much of our speedway administration, and has held his ACU licence – in various capacities, including being a referee – for more than forty years!”
“Then there’s race-night presenter Dick Barrie, who seems to know the phone number of everyone in speedway all over the world, and has been immersed in the sport for over sixty years”.
“Between them, these guys will keep me on the straight and narrow!”
Directly following the match against Rye House, the Bandits Supporters’ Club are staging a free Hog Roast – for BSC members only – at the stadium.
Guest of honour will be six times Speedway World Champion Ivan Mauger, OBE, MBE, who will be attending the entire evening’s entertainment as guests of the fine hospitality staff.
Ivan will also be signing copies of his excellent new autobiography entitled “The Will To Win” which was launched at the recent British Grand Prix at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium.
