The Redcar Bears will aim for a hat-trick of home victories when they take on the Birmingham Brummies in Premier League action at the South Tees Motorsport Park, off South Bank Road Middlesbrough, on Thursday evening with tapes up from 7.30pm.
Their opponents lie second in the league table and have booked track specialist Michal Rajowski as a guest replacement for the injured ex-Bear Chris Kerr so the Bears will have to be at their very best. However club boss Brian Havelock reflects the increased confidence that there is in the Teesside camp: 'We conquered Kings Lynn a fortnight ago when no-one gave us a chance then kept up that momentum with last Thursday's victory over Stoke in which skipper Gary Havelock was unbeaten in five rides and James Grieves was obviously getting dialled in with twelve and one bonus point in his tally. We will go into this match against one of the top teams in the division in the right frame of mind let me assure you.'
Birmingham are spearheaded by two Australian veterans Jason Lyons and Steve Johnston. Lyons first came to these shores in 1990 and rode for Glasgow before a career of over a decade with the Belle Vue Aces of Manchester in the Elite League. He has been a mainstay of the Brummies side since Speedway was rekindled in the West Midlands city in 2007. Johnstone first appeared at Sheffield in 1992 and has spent the bulk of his racing career in the Elite League too. They are supported by two up and coming compatriots from the other end of the age scale in the shape of Richard Sweetman and Justin Sedgmen who started their time in British Speedway as teenagers in recent seasons. Missing with a broken collarbone is another young Australian Aaron Summers so the Birmingham management operate the rider replacement for the former Redcar Cub.
However it is Michal Rajowski who may prove to be a key player. The Berwick Bandit replaces Californian Chris Kerr who is still recovering from a broken leg and it is only three weeks since the Polish rider scored sixteen plus three bonus points from the reserve berth against the Bears at the Motorpark. Senior reserve Tomas Suchanek was on good form for the Bears last Saturday night away at Stoke with two heat wins in his nine point tally and this should set the Czech racer up well for the impending clashes with Rajkowski.
