BIRMINGHAM Speedway chief Graham Drury insists the Premier Trophy Final with Newcastle is far from over going into Wednesday's second leg at Perry Barr (7.30).
That's despite the BRC Roofing Brummies suffering a 58-36 defeat on Tyneside on Sunday night in the first leg when they were thankful for some strength at reserve in on-loan Dudley Heathens skipper Lee Smart who top scored with 8+2.
Said Drury: "We beat Newcastle 60-32 at Perry Barr a few weeks back and we will need a repeat performance. We sat down in the dressing room after the meeting and said we need a similar performance from the reserves and if Jason (Lyons) and Johno (Steve Johnston) are on full gas we can turn this around.
"It will be tough, and I have no doubt it will be a tense night - but we need the backing of our wonderful fans if we are to pull off a major national title. We're up for it, despite this result."
Newcastle boasted a rock-solid top five, in stark contrast to the Brummies for whom Justin Sedgmen's nightmare run continued - and he was far from the only rider to be below-par.
Lyons ground to a halt in Heat 1 and was then disqualified after falling under Rene Bach's challenge in Heat 5, which was one of several decisions which angered the Brummies supporters.
Guest reserve Smart did win Heat 2, but three 5-1s in the space of four races between Heats 3 and 6 put the Diamonds into an imposing 24-12 lead.
Richard Sweetman won Heat 7 to reduce the deficit to ten, but just when the Brummies needed big points from the double-points tactical ride, Steve Johnston was beaten by Derek Sneddon in Heat 8 to limit him to four points.
Newcastle emphasised their supremacy with two more 5-1s, Johnston penalised for a starting offence in Heat 9, and after the Diamonds took a fortunate maximum from Heat 10 when Jason King could have been disqualified, Lyons was beaten on a tactical ride by Mark Lemon.
Brummies failed to win another race with the main damage in the latter stages coming with Lyons and Johnston conceding a Heat 13 5-1 to Kenni Larsen and Mark Lemon.
King and Bach were both unbeaten throughout for the home side, with Larsen's winning run halted when he brought Lyons down in the last race, the end of which came as something of a relief.
