Poole Castle Cover Pirates have got to do what they have never done in their history on Wednesday if they are to maintain their push for an Elite League and Cup Double in 2010 … beat Belle Vue over two legs!
In seven previous conventional cup encounters, Pirates have lost every one against the Manchester club … but Pirates boss Matt Ford believes his side of 2010 can lay the ghost once and for all this time.
But the Aces literally hold the trump card after winning this season’s quarter-final first leg by 10 points at the beginning of this month.
Ford admitted: “History is not on our side in cup matches against Belle Vue. The statistics clearly show that we struggle each time we meet them in cup encounters.
“But no-one would have predicted the Pirates team could have run up 70 points against Lakeside earlier in the season or that Chris Holder could win the British Grand Prix on his first ever rides at the Millennium.
“That’s what the personnel in this Pirates side are capable of. With us chasing a 10-point deficit this looks on paper to be a potential cup classic in the making.”
And team manager Neil Middleditch backed boss Ford: “At some time or other records have to be broken. This seems like a perfect time to me!
“I’m very aware that Belle Vue will be looking to use their tactical double-point rides to stonewall against us.
“But we have to get in a position of being far enough in front for Aces to work the tacticals.
“We will have one objective on Wednesday. To win … and win well!”
