Astley & Tyldesley hosted the 1st National Round of the British Youth & Junior League series on Saturday.

The event saw a record number of 172 riders competing, with 208 races completed in an event that lasted for more than 10 hours, with the floodlights on for the last hour! It was a great tribute to the A & T club and the officials imported for the day, that the meeting ran so smoothly and the track held up to provide a great day's racing, despite torrential rain during the early part.

The youngsters turned in a terrific display of racing throughout the day, as this competition continues to develop. Poole brought up a squad of 26 riders to win the first national round, with all six teams in strong contention. Congratulations go to all the Grand Prix winners, with Exeter riders taking the first three finals of the day. Photographs of the meeting will be published later this week on the Astley & Tyldesley website at www.astleycyclespeedway.org.uk

A & T entertained Stockport in a junior challenge match at Gin Pit on Sunday. A stronger Stockport squad loaned Jake Read to a very inexperienced A & T team, following the non-arrival of Tyler Koch, to make for a more competitive match. A good match took place and although the outcome of a Stockport win was never in doubt, the A & T youngsters gave it their all and gained valuable match experience. Read raced unbeaten, with Reece Pollitt scoring well, whilst Bethan Braithwaite and Alex Green were both race winners. Newcomer Blake Healey impressed for Stockport, with their more experienced riders all scoring well.

Round 4 of the North West Go-Race Grand Prix series followed and the handicappings applied made for some good racing and very close finishes. Reece Pollitt won all five races to score a 20 points maximum, with Stockport pair Callum Smith and Jake Read 2nd and 3rd with 19 and 18 points respectively. These three all met in heat 6, which was re-run after Pollitt and Smith locked bikes first time out. Pollitt held off a strong challenge from Smith to win the re-run, with Read making a valiant effort to make up the handicap.
