Poole Castle Cover Pirates did more than enough over 14 heats to regain their 7 point lead at the top of the Sky Sports Elite league table, beating the Lakeside Hammers by 56-33, breaking the 48,500 home league race point tally in the process.

In front of a big crowd all wanting to see the homecoming of British GP winner Chris Holder and meet sporting legends Ivan Mauger and Joe Calzaghe, the Pirates quickly recovered from an opening heat hiccup as the Hammers, through guest Chris Harris and Kauko Nieminen, banked a 5-1, at the expense of the man of the moment Chris Holder who was still overcome by the generosity of the club in presenting him with a massive widescreen television.

The Pirates quickly recovered from that slow start and were always in control once they had established a lead of their own after back to back maximum heat advantages.

The large crowd were treated to some good speedway not least the heat 4 duel between Upton based Dave Watt and Broadstone resident Adam Shields, the Lakeside rider also making Chris Holder work overtime for a win in heat 6.

The Pirates though had sealed the meeting win before the interval, taken after heat 12 but once racing resumed there was a treat of speedway in  heat 13  between the two Chris H's that was the highlight of the meeting, British Champion Chris Harris under intense pressure from  British GP winner Holder before making it 4 wins from 4 starts for the Lakeside guest, one of which was worth 6 points.

But hopes of the Essex side scrounging a consolation point were dashed when Watt again beat Shields for third place in that heat.

World U21 finalists Darcy Ward and Artur Mroczka then combined for a 5-1 to extend the Pirates lead to 23 points and before any nominations could be agreed for heat 15 the rain lashed down leaving the track instantly waterlogged and the match abandoned with the result standing.

The Pirates will now visit Eastbourne on Thursday night, fielding an unchanged side against the Eagles that will have number one Matej Zagar back but will be without latest signing Tomasz Jedrzejak for whom rider replacement will operate.

Poole 56 - D.Ward 10+1 (3,2',2,3), B.Pedersen 9+2 (2',2,3,2'), C.Holder 9 (1,3,3,2), A.Mroczka 8+3 (3,1',2',2'), D.Watt 8+2 (3,3,1',1'), J.Doyle 8+1 (2',FD,3,3), L.Madsen 4+1 (0,1,1,2')

Lakeside 33 - C.Harris 15, K.Nieminen 6+1, A.Shields 5, J.Davidsson 3, S.Robson 2+1, J.Davidsson 1, P.Hurry 1
