Astley & Tyldesley hosted the first of their four major events this summer, with the staging of the Northern Individual Championships. Thanks to the hard work of club members, the arena was in tip top condition and a great day's racing took place.

Bury's James Elston won the U-10 title, with a 16 points maximum score. Astley & Tyldesley riders took the other podium positions, with Adam Turnbull runner-up and first year rider Ross Green taking 3rd place.

Northern U-10 Individual Championship result
James Elston (Bury) 16, Adam Turnbull (A & T) 15, Ross Green (A & T) 14, Jack Hart (Bury) 13, Tyler Koch (A & T) 12, Charlotte Gilmore (A & T) 11, Max Elliott (Bury) 10.
Referee - John Whiting (Bury).

A & T's Adam Phillips took the U-13 title, with a maximum 20 points score. He beat his main rivals Matt Turner and Joel Partington early on, recording easily the two fastest times of the match, and was always in control after that. Turner was adjudged to have beaten Partington in a very close finish in heat 8. Joel's chances of a top three place went when he inexplicably slid off when well in front in heat 12. This let in Stockport's first year rider Callum Smith to take a surprise 3rd place, behind his team mate Matt Turner.

The U-16 Championship went down to the final series of races, with the unbeaten duo of Stockport's Dylan Radcliffe and Hull's Matt Beharrell lining up off grids 2 and 3 respectively in heat 10. A strong start from Beharrell saw him gate across Radcliffe and hold on to take the win and the title. Stockport's Jack Lush lost to the leading duo early on before finishing with two wins to take 3rd place. Sheffield's Laura Watson received the Ladies Champion award - the only entrant.

The U-19 Championship was a keenly fought affair, which was effectively decided in a re-run heat 8. Hull's Matt Beharrell made the most of his grid 1 to hold off a strong challenge from his team mate Adam Stephenson and take the win, with Sheffield's Ben Dickenson third. This was the final finishing order in the match, as the three riders won all their other races.

The final event of the day saw a very competitive Senior Championship, which kept the referee busy with plenty of clashes throughout the match. Heat 2 ultimately proved to be a decisive race, as Stockport's Terry Norman took the win from grid 1 in the re-run, ahead of Hull duo Matt Beharrell and Adam Stephenson, with Sheffield's Dariusz Pilas fourth. Norman, Stephenson and Pilas all won their remaining four races each after that, to secure the top three places. Beharrell won his next two races, before trailing in third from a grid 1 in heat 13. The match boiled over with an ugly incident in heat 17. Beharrell was slowing up as Stockport's Jack Lush dived up the inside at the pits bend. The two riders clashed, with the referee stopping the race and excluding Lush for ramming. Beharrell then decided to take his own retribution and punched Lush in the face, leaving the referee no option but to match ban Beharrell for fighting. Despite now being a veteran, Terry Norman added to his record of having won more senior individuals than any other rider at the Gin Pit circuit. Adam Stephenson showed his ability, in recording the fastest time of the season, 42.91 secs, when winning heat 13, whilst Dariusz Pilas recovered well after a last place first time out.

Referee - Alan Farrell (Astley & Tyldesley).

Stockport hosted the Northern K.O. Cup Final. On a very hot sunny afternoon, the watered track quickly dried out. Edinburgh set the early pace and held a 1 point lead over Stockport at the half way stage (heat 10), with Hull a further 6 points adrift in 3rd place. Craig Newsome tried to power round Jack Lush on the first lap of heat 11, but overslid on the pits bend and his trailing leg inadvertently brought down Lush. The race was stopped and re-run with the exclusion of Newsome. Stockport moved into the lead, after Lush won the re-run. Stockport gradually increased their lead throughout the second half and Ben Higham's win in heat 18 clinched the trophy for the home team. With a considerable range of ages and abilities of riders, many races were strung out with little incident, but the Stockport riders several times showed their passing ability on a dry track, when behind. Mikey Hewitson raced unbeaten for Edinburgh, but Craig Newsome's two exclusions in the second half ended their chances of victory. Edinburgh just held on to pip Hull for 2nd place, whilst Heckmondwike saw off Bury for 4th place, albeit with 4 points scored by a loaned Bury rider, Max Elliott.
