Bury made the trip to Edinburgh on Sunday 4th July for a Northern League fixture.

Unfortunately, as has been all too common within the Northern League in recent years Bury could only raise a four man team for the two separate six man team matches that had been scheduled.

As a contest this meant the result of both matches was never really in doubt even before a wheel had been turned.  However, this didn’t stop the A team from putting in a professional performance eventually demolishing Bury by 97 points to 37.  The Edinburgh dominance was clear to be seen as three riders raced unbeaten by an opponent, Slight, Newsome and “youngster” Murphy.

The B Team match was a slightly different affair but as there were only four Bury riders, three of which were ineligible for B team racing therefore giving away 57 penalty points, as a contest this never got started.  Lack of rider number for Bury was not helped by an awkward fall in heat one for John Whiting, their only eligible rider for B team racing, meaning he took no further part in the meeting.

On the plus side the Edinburgh juniors continued to get some much needed racing and are continuing to impress.

A big thank you also goes out to the track staff who worked tirelessly all day to ensure both matches went ahead in the frequent monsoon conditions.

As grateful as the Edinburgh promotion are to those Bury riders who made the trip to Edinburgh it is extremely disappointing, but not unexpected, given the problems Bury have had so far this season with rider numbers.

Similarly, Heckmondwike are due next at Redbraes on 18th July and it has been many years since they were able to send a full team to compete in Edinburgh.  There are some serious concerns which need to be addressed by the Northern League Committeee come the end of the season.
