One of the most colourful characters of Classic Speedway in Australia passed away in the early hours of Sunday morning [13 June 2010].
"It is with a heavy heart that we have to inform our speedway fraternity that David "Coach" Cottrell has passed away after a long illness" said Gillman Speedway Manager, Dave Parker.
"I knew the 'Coach' from years ago when I was a boy racing, and you would have never met a nicer person in Speedway.
"His love for the Vincent HRD Sidecar and the willingness to take his immaculate machines all over the place, and use them as they should be, brought many a heart flutter at Speedway meetings.
"Our heartfelt thanks to David for the thrills he gave the people from Gillman, and for his friendship over the years and my heart is with his family and friends".
David Cottrell was one of Melbourne's leading Sidecar riders in the 1960s and 70s, and won the Victorian Championship at Mildura in 1970, before a monumental crash at the Port Pirie long track in 1972.
Over the last decade he was heavily involved in the Classic scene, building up a stable of Vincent Sidecars which raced under the banner of the Cottrell Garage Vincent Sidecar Team.
In 2003 he restored the Len Bowes Supercharged Vincent; in 2004 the Neil Munro Vincent, and in 2005 he built a replica of his own bike.
