The biggest flattrack racing event ever staged in Europe sees the return to the Short Track UK series of Braintree Bonanza winner and top GB Speedway World Cup star, Ed Kennett this weekend.
The two day event held at the UK's only half-mile dirt-track motorcycling circuit, on traditional cinders to boot, at the Amman Valley Trotting Arena in Ammanford near Swansea in South Wales, is attracting a record field of sixty-plus riders and over 65 races.
Under the magnificent floodlights on Saturday evening will be staged Round One of this year's European Mefo Flattrack Cup event - the first-time the continent's main Short Track event has been staged in the UK. Riders from seven countries compete,: the home nation Wales plus England (featuring last year's winner Steve Hall), Italy (regular Ammanford winner, Marco Belli installed as pre-meeting favourite), Switzerland, the Netherlands, Germany and special guest from over the pond, certain to report back to the home of the sport quite how far the Limeys have progessed: AMA Pro Flattracker, Levi Mayer.
After the European round, it's back to the STUK title race on the Sunday afternoon with former Speedway man, Ade Collins going into Round Three of this year's championship with a 100% record from the opening two rounds held at King's Lynn and Peterborough. The challenge for Collins and Kennett will be to transfer their skills around the smaller circuits to the super-fast wide-open spaces of Amman Valley.
An added attraction this weekend is the Harley-Davidson backed Custom XR Show – with for the first-time ever, Britain’s best street trackers and vintage flat track race bikes on display. Prizes for best in show, best budget bike, best engineering and best paint job donated by Sideburn magazine and Red Max Speed Shop.
The Mefo Cup meeting on Saturday night starts at 7pm with the afternoon action on the Sunday underway at 1pm. Venue details: Amman Valley Trotting Track, Tairgwaith, Ammanford, SA18 1UU. Please follow brown directional signs for Trotting Track, then signs for car-parking.
