Defending champions Matt Tyrrell and Shaun Yates took the honours in the first round of this year’s ACU British Track Racing Sidecar Championship at the St Boniface Arena, Plymouth, on Friday evening.

But they were given a keen contest by Mark Cossar and Andi Wilson, the reigning 1000cc Sidecar Masters Champions.

Tyrrell and Yates made the perfect start when they headed home Cossar and Wilson on their first meeting in the second heat.

The positions were reversed, however, with Tyrrell and Yates suffering their only defeat of the evening when they met up again with Cossar and Wilson in heat 14. The Cossar/Wilson combination roared to victory while Tyrrell/Yates had to settle for third behind Rich Moore and Gareth Little after making a poor start.

Cossar and Wilson topped the qualifying scores with 17 points, one ahead of Tyrrell and Yates, but the defending champions ended the evening in style with victory in the final.

Scores: Mark Cossar and Andi Wilson 17, Matt Tyrrell and Shaun Yates 16, Rod Winterburn and Liam Brown 14, Rich Moore and Gareth Little 12, Gary Jackson and Henry Rogers 12, Craig Smith and Brett Edge 11, Joe Sturtridge and Lee Toms 8, Tris Winterburn and Dan Crawford 6, Paul Whitelam and Alan Elliot 5, Mick Stace and Mark Truscott 3, Phil Syms and Gareth Bemister 2, Simon Heal and Rick Mcauley 1.

Final: Tyrrell/Yates, Cossar/Wilson, Rod Winterburn/Brown, Moore/Little
