Berwick Bandits used the rider replacement rule to cover for the injured Complin in last night’s second leg of the Tyne Tweed Trophy and following a stuttering start put some better starts in mid match to make the event as tight as a drum.
In another superb serving of speedway Newcastle’s Derek Sneddon fell heavily in Heat One when his steel shoe came adrift at the staring gate allowing the re-run to be shared, but a fine win from Adam McKinna in Heat Two and Jason King in the third put Newcastle up 12-6 and comfortable on aggregate.
Berwick’s resurgence began in the fourth with an excellent win from Michal Makovsky followed home by partner Branney for a solid 1-5 with the testimonial man also taking a lightening gate in the sixth for three more points taking the score to 20-16, Newcastle still up overall 67-59.
A cruel engine failure for Sneddon on the last bend of Heat Eight when the hi-tension lead came away from his plug presented the chasing Bandit pairing of Branney and Jade Mudgway a 1-5 to level the meeting at 24 all and restore the initial aggregate gap to four points.
A very fortunate Rene Bach got to his feet from a fierce looking spill on the first bend of Heat Nine’s opening lap when he hit a patch of drive, reared and hit the fence, neatly missed by the following three riders, but he was excluded from the re-run which was a straight-forward 2-4 to Berwick, putting the visitors two up at 26-28, cutting the over all deficit to two.
A Larsen / Sneddon 4-2 in the 10th levelled it all up once more 30-all, whist it was still all-square at the end of a riveting Heat 11 when new boy Dakota North shot to the front on bend two to be joined by Lemon on bend three, but despite his efforts the new Diamond is still learning his track and ended up at the rear, but with a stack of credit.
Berwick tied the event on aggregate with three races to go with a stunning 1-5 from Clews and Branney over King and McKinna to lead on the night 34-38, but heroics from Larsen to push Makovsky wide on lap one gave Newcastle a 4-2 in Heat 13 to ease them back into the lead.
A share in Heat 14 left the overall gap at two in Newcastle’s favour, 88-86 with one race to go in which saw Larsen jet to the front as Makovsky shot under Lemon with force but with Clews falling at the rear on the last lap the trophy was won for the third year in succession by Newcastle, although Berwick could be proud of holding a draw at their fierce rivals, 45-45.
George English, Newcastle’s team manager said: “I had visions of us losing this trophy tonight with three to go, but Kenni, Rene and Mark fought well to hold things together and give us the overall win in a superbly entertaining meeting filled with great racing which did indeed go down to the final heat in the competition.”
