Eastbourne Lifestyle Eagles co-promoters Mike Bellerby and Trevor Geer along with club skipper Cameron Woodward declared Wednesday evenings Radio phone in fans forum on BBC Radio Sussex a raging success.
The event, hosted by the stations Sports Editor Tim Durrans proved something of a lively debate, firstly the trio being quizzed on their thoughts, hopes and aspirations for the campaign ahead, the exchanges being interspersed with questions phoned, e-mailed and texted in by the Sussex clubs supporters on a range of topics, some light hearted, some more serious and some downright humorous.
A variety of themes were discussed, certainly the subject of the Eagles change of race night to a Thursday featured strongly, both Geer and Bellerby stating once more that it was a decision that was made with a certain degree of regret, but nevertheless one that was effectively forced upon them by the ever increasing International fixture calendar, one that centred almost exclusively around weekends, and the inevitable rider availability issues it subsequently imposed on the Sussex promotion. Both stressed however that the decision, however regrettable, having been made, it was one that they were confident would succeed in the longer term as fans warmed to the prospect of midweek racing.
Several other questions were levelled, their own thoughts on Eagles chances of claiming silverware in 2010, as well as who would be the likely contenders, Poole and Saturday’s visitors Peterborough being generally the top tip, should Eastbourne prove unable to take the gold.
Eastbourne’s gate price strategy for the new season was another subject to come under scrutiny, whether Nicki Pedersen would be likely to appear in Eagles colours again in the future, through to Woodward’s ongoing wager with former team mate Davey Watt over who would be the first to get a haircut in season 2010 proving further highlights.
Each point made and every question raised prompted an honest and accurate response from the three Eagles representatives. However well the answers might have been received by the individual posing the question would inevitably fuel a further debate but the over-riding feel of the event was one of extreme positivity, with the Sussex management getting the welcome message through loud and clear that the supporters, or at least those represented by the callers were 100% behind the club for the battles ahead.
Following the success of the radio phone in, the Eagles officials remain hopeful that this will prove the start of regular and in-depth coverage of the club and its exploits on BBC Radio Sussex along with the many other media outlets representing the district.
Indeed it was to prove little more than twelve hours before Mike Bellerby was to feature on the station once again as he appeared, along with the secretary of the newly rejuvenated Eastbourne Speedway Supporters Club, Michelle Rideout on the BBC Sussex breakfast show on Friday morning at 8.35 a.m.
Following a broadcast during the latter part of last season chronicling the uncertainty surrounding the future of the Sussex club and its possible demise, the duo were invited back to reinforce the message that the Eastbourne ‘Lifestyle’ Eagles remain very much alive and kicking with the tapes set to rise on the 2010 season.
For supporters unable to listen or unaware of the broadcast, a listen again facility is available on the BBC Radio Sussex website http://www.bbc.co.uk/sussex/local_radio a link to which can also be found on the Eagles own official website http://www.elite-eagles.com
Club co-promoter Bellerby is delighted at the link up with BBC Sussex and the degree of air time they have so far allied to their cause. He commented “We are most grateful to Tim Durrans and all at BBC Sussex for their valued support. We look forward to working closely with them both throughout the year ahead and beyond, of course we look forward even more to giving them a consistent and winning team to monitor, focus and report upon”.
