Overnight rain, coupled with the forecast of steady showers through the afternoon, led to the early call-off of the Silver Ski Rockets’ eagerly anticipated team opener against Leicester on Saturday (March 20th). The Rockets will now go straight into Premier Trophy action against Somerset next Saturday, March 27th.
Bring ‘Em On: Somerset
The Silver Ski Rockets face their first competitive match of the new season when they face Somerset at Rye House in the Premier Trophy next Saturday (March 27th). Following Steve Johnston’s somewhat unexpected departure to Birmingham and the unfortunate passing of Emil Kramer, the Rebels have a rather new-look spearhead. Firestarter Shane Parker has moved south after six seasons with Glasgow, while former Rocket Steve Boxall will be looking for a more stable 2010 after floating between Newcastle, Belle Vue and Poole last season. Joining the Boxmeister in the Rebel Army is another familiar face in the shape of Tommy Allen. The Tommy Gun originally ruled himself out of action for the year after a relentless series of injuries last term before re-considering his decision and nabbing a spot at one of his favourite circuits.
Elsewhere, former Western Australian and Victoria State Champion Cory Gathercole is back for a third straight season at the Oak Tree Arena, while 2004 British U-21 Champion Ritchie Hawkins has returned to the West Coast after a season’s absence. There is a totally new face at reserve in the shape of 18 years old New South Wales U-21 titlist Sam Masters, who is making his British debut. Fellow reserve, and 2009 Bronze Helmet winner, Jay Herne has been a recent question mark following a knee injury suffered at last month’s Australian Long-Track Championship, but has come through the Rebels’ Press and Practice Day without apparent side effects, so should also start on Saturday.
