NEWPORT WASPS

NEWPORT legend Frank Smart, one of the most popular riders ever to race for the club, will make an emotional return on Sunday.

Smart will ride for a team of past Wasps against the 2010 team in their opening meeting of the season.
Wasps co-promoter Nick Mallett said: “There has been so much interest in this fixture and many fans past and present can't wait to see Frank Smart and the 1999 boys on track and around the stadium.

“We look forward to seeing many of our former supporters back on the terraces and in the grandstand on Sunday. It would be great to revive the level of support that those legends enjoyed in the previous decade.”

BERWICK BANDITS

BERWICK co-boss John Anderson says his side are desperate to win back the Tyne-Tweed Trophy from Newcastle this weekend.

The Diamonds have won it for the past two seasons and the sides meet again at Shielfield Park on Saturday with the return at Brough Park the following night.

Said Anderson: “These nights are going to be nothing but very intense encounters – the supporters of both clubs expect, and deserve, nothing less. We are very determined against a powerful Newcastle side.”
