BIRMINGHAM got the new Speedway season off to a flyer with a 54-36 win over Stoke in the M6 Trophy first leg last night.

It was a solid all-round team performance from the BRC Roofing Brummies with everyone scoring well apart from rookie Jake Anderson. Chris Kerr, the only non-Australian in the side, was top man with a stunning 14-point haul.

The meeting was delayed because of a huge opening night crowd who packed the Perry Barr terraces and they were rewarded with a good Brummies win thanks to a late rally.

To be fair to Stoke they kept the scores close with some determined racing and Skipper Jason Bunyan took Kerr off in Heat 5.

There was some good entertainment for the bumper crowd to enjoy and when Steve Johnston teamed up with skipper Jason Lyons in 13 for a maximum 5-1 it was all over bar the shouting.

The scoreline was given a more emphatic appearance with two more maximums - including the penultimate race when ex-Wolves star Hynek Stichauer was denied double points on a tactical ride.

Boss Graham Drury said: "We are encouraged by the performance, it's nice to win but there's a lot to work on."

BIRMINGHAM: Chris Kerr 14, Richard Sweetman 10+4, Steve Johnston 9+1, Justin Sedgmen 9+1, Jason Lyons 6+2, Aaron Summers 6, Jake Anderson 0.

STOKE: Klaus Jakobsen 9, Michal Rajkowski 7, Jason Bunyan 5, James Holder 4+1, Ricky Wells 4, Hynek Stichauer 4, Taylor Poole 3+3.
