Stoke Easy Rider Potters went down an eighteen point defeat against local rivals Birmingham in the first leg of the M6 Trophy at Perry Barr last night.

Despite the score line the Potters did put up a decent display as they repeatedly made good starts only to be overhauled in the latter stages of quite a few heats.

The Easy Rider Potters flew off the start in heat one with Klaus Jakobsen leading skipper Jason Bunyan into the first corner before Jakobsen went wide coming out of the second turn allowing home number one Steve Johnston up the inside to take second place as Bunyan hit the front to take the win with Jakobsen third the Potters edged in front with a 4-2 heat win.

James Holder made a good start for the Potters in heat two but Justin Sedgmen got the better of the Potter down the back straight on lap two with Taylor Poole in third for a drawn heat.

Birmingham edged in front after three heats with maximum points from Chris Kerr and Richard Sweetman with Sweetman gaining second place off the final turn after Michal Rajkowski went to wide on the final turn as he tried to re-pass Sweetman giving Birmingham a 5-1 heat advantage and a two point lead on the night as the Brummies lead 10-8.

In heat five Stoke’s pairing of Jakobsen and Bunyan make a superb start but Bunyan was rounded by American Kerr, Bunyan tried to re-pass Kerr up the inside on the final lap but seemed to clip Kerr causing both riders to fall with referee Dave Watters awarding the race excluding Bunyan as the primary cause leaving the Brummies two points in front with the score 16-14.

Birmingham extended their lead in heat six as Steve Johnston and Justin Sedgmen teamed up for a 4-2 over Ricky Wells and James Holder to open up a four point lead.

Michal Rajkowski and Hynek Stichauer gated in heat seven but Rajkowski was overhauled by home skipper Jason Lyons and then impressive Brummies reserve Sedgmen.

Heat nine saw the Brummies extend their lead to eight points as Chris Kerr and Richard Sweetman stormed to maximum points over James Holder after Ricky Wells fell on the second lap to give Birmingham a 31-23 lead.

Michal Rajkowski gained a hard fought victory in heat ten to defeat Aaron Summer on the line after Summers had managed to pass Rajkowski on the second lap the Polish rider went for the outside line and grabbed victory on the finish line for a drawn heat.

The Potters struck back with a 4-2 heat advantage as Jakobsen and Bunyan again make a good start but Sedgmen got the better of the Potters number one to take second place with Bunyan holding off Lyons until the third bend of the final lap when Lyons fell when going wide trying to line the Stoke skipper up reducing the deficit to six points as the Brummies lead 36-30 after eleven heats.

Birmingham extend their lead in heat thirteen as Johnston and Lyons gain maximum points over Bunyan and Wells to open up a ten point advantage with the scores 44-34 with two heats remaining.

Stoke team boss Malcolm Vasey moves quickly bringing in Hynek Stichauer as a tactical ride with the Potters trailing by ten points.  Stichauer made the start but was quickly passed by the home pairing of Sweetman and Sedgman as the Brummies extended their lead to fourteen points with one heat remaining.

The Brummies rounded off the night with a 5-1 maximum heat win their third on the bounce as Chris Kerr and Richard Sweetman stormed from the start to head home Michal Rajkowski and Klaus Jakobsen giving the West Midlands outfit a 54-36 victory over the Potters.

Stoke promoter Dave Tattum said “It was a close meeting until the final three heats when Birmingham hit us for three successive five ones which really did not do us justice with the scoreline at the end of the meeting up until that point we were only six points down. Klaus and Michal both looked sharp out of the starts and the others all had their moments at different parts of the meeting and I’m sure given a few matches the lads will settle down.”

Birmingham 54: Chris Kerr 14, Richard Sweetman 10+4, Steve Johnston 9+1, Justin Sedgmen 9+1, Jason Lyons 6+2, Aaron Summers 6, Jake Anderson 0

Stoke 36: Klaus Jakobsen 9, Michal Rajkowski 7, Jason Bunyan 5, James Holder 4+1, Ricky Wells 4, Hynek Stichauer 4, Taylor Poole 3+3
