The wait is over and the 2010 season is almost upon us with the A-Plant Tigers opening up against Elite League opposition in a glamour Inter League Challenge against the World famous Coventry Bees. The Bees always figure strongly in the upper echelons of the Elite League and have put together a young but highly promising team for their title chase this season. The Tigers are concentrating on their Premier League campaign but will hope to put up a good show against their more illustrious opponents.
One of the big talking points of the winter was Glasgow's attempts to sign former GB Internationalist Joe Screen but that was blocked by red tape, but the Manchester based rider will race for the Tigers after all, for one meeting only. The Tigers have opted to bring in a guest to try to even up the sides and make this opening meeting an exciting encounter for what will undoubtedly be a big crowd. Recently appointed skipper Lee Dicken is keen to see the team get off to a good start:
"We are all very excited about the start to the new season and after our practice session last week we are all desperate to get started. We know that we will be racing against a side who are certainly a notch above us, but all we can do is go out and attack the track and do as best as we can. We have a couple of new riders who are looking to get as much experience of Ashfield as possible while the rest of us are in need of laps early on to set us up nicely for the Premier League competitions which start the following week against Edinburgh.
On a personal level this will be my first meeting as captain and I am as proud as punch. I was delighted when asked to take on the role and it will be my intention to do my best to try to get the best out of the riders, especially the younger ones, as every point can be very important.
The Promotion have managed to go out and get Joe Screen for this meeting as a guest and that means we now have a very strong top end to our team with Travis and James also there, so I think there is every chance that we can be quite competitive throughout the side. Everything that has happened at Glasgow this winter has been of a very high quality so now the time is right for the riders to help to start to payback those who have done so much for us."
TEAMS:
Glasgow: 1. Travis McGowan 2. Robert Ksiezak 3. James Grieves 4. Joe Screen 5. Josh Grajczonek 6. Jamie Courtney 7. Lee Dicken/Mitchell Davey
Coventry: 1. Edward Kennett 2. Filip Sitera 3. Ben Barker 4. Christian Hefenbrock 5. Rory Schlein 6. Aaron Summers 7. Josh Auty
BEST OF THE REST:
The A-Plant Tigers will be resplendent in their new race suits for this fixture. The suits, courtesy of a sponsorship deal with Cameron Young Transport, were on display for the first time at Press and Practice last week and were very well received by the supporters in attendance.
The Tigers will utilise a shared number 7 spot due to the arrival of Joe Screen as a guest. This unique method means that there will technically be three reserves racing in the meet and the team manager can utilise any rider for these races. Although this is against the rules for league and competitive team racing, there are no hard and fast rules in challenge fixtures.
Three Tigers should take to the track prior to Sunday with Josh Grajczonek due to be the first on the shale as he rides for Belle Vue in an Inter League challenge at Sheffield, while Travis McGowan and James Grieves will take part in the Scottish Open at Armadale on Friday night.
