The Kart Raceway Cobras have suffered a major blow right at the start of the new season. New No.1 Jamie Smith suffered an on-track tumble at Monday’s (March 15th) Press and Practice session, and after feeling increasing pain admitted himself to hospital later that day.
Doctors informed him that he had suffered a severely torn left calf muscle, have put him in plaster for three to four weeks and advised that the injury could well take between three to five months to heal.
It is the latest in a string of unfortunate injuries for the former World U-21 Finalist, and leaves the Cobras scrambling to find a new spearhead. Although they have approximately 11 points to play with within the team building points limit, team manager John Sampford describes the task as “trying to replace the irreplaceable. We were looking for Jamie to produce double figure scores home and away, and we are now in the position of trying to find someone on the market who can cover that gap, when there are very few available.”
Sampford and promoter Len Silver at least have a little time to work on alternatives. The Cobras’ first match of the season comes in a highly anticipated international challenge fixture against the American Dream Team on Easter Saturday (April 3rd @ 7pm), although their first National League meeting does not come until April 18th, when they visit King’s Lynn.
