Birmingham Monarchs got their cycle speedway season off to a flying start with victory at Midland League rivals Leicester on Sunday.

The Monarchs, who completed the whole of the 2009 Midland League season unbeaten, were level at 45 points each at the interval before racing away for a comfortable 101 – 78 victory.

Top scorer for Birmingham was Nathan Groves with 18 points but there were solid performances from Chris Timms, Marcus Wadhams, new signing Ben Mould and Birmingham Metropolitan College student Paul Heard who all scored 16 points or more. In all the Monarchs provided 14 of the 18 race winners and despite the closeness of the interval scoreline were never really in trouble.

In the two division 2 matches there were two more victories for Birmingham and the Club were able to track 17 different riders across these 3 matches including their first female rider for a long while Natalie Timms, the oldest current member Bob Prince  (59) and the youngest Ryan Winwood (7).

The Club race their first home match of the season in Perry Park this Sunday (21st) in the Midland League against Stoke, tapes up at 2pm with free admission and refreshments available – come along and have a look – if you like it then you can come and have a go every Tuesday and Thursday at 6pm (bikes and equipment provided).
