Speedway racing returns to the South Tees Motorsport Park off South Bank Road, Middlesbrough for the fifth successive season on Thursday March 18th. The Redcar Bears will face the Workington Comets in a challenge match with tapes up at 7.30pm.

For the Bears Gary Havelock has recovered from the back injuries which curtailed his 2009 campaign and will again captain the side from the number one position. A familiar name will be paired with him in the line-up as popular Czech Republic international Tomas Suchanek returns to the club having been one of the original Bears of season 2006 who relaunched the sport on Teesside after a ten-year absence.

2009 'Bear of the Year' Ben Wilson returns for a second season with the stated ambition of trying to be the number one rider this season while fans are more than happy that Slovenian Maks Gregoric will be with the Bears from day one having made a limited number of appearances last Autumn. Maks is both spectacular and prolific and exciting times are ahead. Also very welcome in the ranks is Stockton's Stuart Swales who made a comeback in 2009 after a seven-year absence from the sport and was on the pace straightaway.

Completely new to the Redcar club are Argentinian Emiliano Sanchez and Dane Jan Graversen. Both rode for the Kings Lynn Stars last year and were members of the Premier League Championship success for the Norfolk club. Sanchez will give experienced and solid support to the Bears heat leader trio of Havelock, Wilson and Gregoric while Graversen forms a strong reserve pairing with Stuart Swales.

Commented Bears team boss Brian Havelock: 'We have assembled a very solid side within the allowed points limit with two reserves who have the ability to push into the top five therefore always affording us the bonus of strength in that department. I am confident that we can be at the top end of the league table again with pursuit of silverware in all competitions.'

Their opening night opponents are spearheaded by former League Riders Champion Andre Compton and Chris Schramm who was another member of the Kings Lynn title-winning team in 2009. They are backed by no less than four local lads from Cumbria who are young and progressing well in the sport. Richard Lawson and Craig Cook have made a successful transition from Motocross riders to speedway racers since 2008 and 2009 respectively while Adam Roynon is a member of the Great Britain squad and John Branney, while just a little older, has found consistency in recent seasons. Their team is completed by 20-year-old Dane Peter Kildemand who made his British debut at the South Tees Silver Meeting last October.
