Luke Chessell, who had only just agreed to join the Jotun Paints Scunthorpe Saints’ squad, produced an impressive display to win the final 2009/10 Winter Series meeting at Scunthorpe.
He headed home Newport’s Daniel I’Anson and Sheffield-based Andrew Blackburn in the final whilst a snapped primary chain left Chessell’s fellow Saint Steven Worrall sat at the tapes.
Two more Saints riders took part but Adam Wrathall had to withdraw with bike problems whilst Ashley Birks had to visit hospital after crashing in his opening ride. Birks was soon allowed home whilst another casualty, Danish rider Dennis Stricker, had a particularly nasty crash which left him with a suspected broken arm. Like Tai Woffinden a week ago, Scorpions’ Viktor Bergström filled a blank space in the programme and produced four stylish heat wins in preparation for the Ben Fund meeting at Rye House this afternoon but the day was undoubtedly Chessell’s with Promoter Rob Godfrey certainly impressed with his performance.
“That was the best I’ve seen Luke ride. He was quick, smooth and fast from the tapes. He is another rider who first had a go on our mini-track and we’ve been following his progress through the amateur meeting classes over the last few months”.
“He is another former Moto-X rider and has only been on a 500 (500cc bike) about a year. He is the son of Mark Chessell who used to ride and has invested in some good equipment this winter. On today’s form he thoroughly deserves his place in the Saints’ squad and he is as keen as mustard. We know he will jump at a chance when one comes along and in the meantime he will continue to ride in the amateur meetings and second-halves”.
In the other classes there were wins for Cheshire’s David Holt (Support) and Merseyside’s Shaun Tedham (Novice) whilst Scorpions’ mascot Reece Downes lowered his best ever time around the Eddie Wright Raceway to 62.2 seconds.
The next amateur racing at the Eddie Wright Raceway is on Sunday 28th March when the club face the Southern Track Riders’ Club in three 15-heat meetings.
