The Newcastle Showground Speedway will now be the venue for both of the meetings that make up the Australian Speedway Sidecar Championship on the Easter weekend.
It was originally planned that the Qualifying Meeting would be staged at the new Kurri Kurri track on Good Friday but with continuing uncertainty about when the Kurri Kurri track will be ready for action a change has been made.
While work on both the track and spectator facilities at Kurri Kurri is progressing, doubt as to when it would be ready for action has led Motorcycling Australia officials to endorse the switch which will see the Qualifying Meeting staged at Newcastle Showground.
In making the announcement this week promoter Graeme Boyd said that the move would be in the best interest of riders and fans as they plan for the Easter weekend. “Kurri Kurri might be ready, but I stress, might” said Boyd who added “I think it is far better to move the meeting now rather than run the risk of a switch of venues close to race day”.
The change of venue has also led to a slight change in the schedule for the weekend with the Qualifying Meeting now to be staged on the afternoon of Easter Saturday (April 3) and the Championship meeting on the evening of Easter Sunday (April 4).
So while the Kurri Kurri track is delayed, Newcastle fans will now get the ‘double header’ as the nation’s best converge to decide who is No.1.
The Australian Sidecar Championship invariably attracts a big contingent of visiting fans, many of them travelling with competitors, and this year should be no different as the Newcastle Showground track hosts the championship for the first time.
Visiting riders are likely to be pleased with the switch as it means that those riders who manage to win through from the Qualifying Meeting will now know that they will be better prepared for the championship night.
In the lead-up to Easter many of Australia’s top riders will be competing each weekend at important meetings on both sides of the Tasman.
After cleaning up at the Australia Day meeting at Newcastle, Darrin Treloar / Justin Plaisted won the Australian Long Track championship at Tamworth last weekend, and they now head across the Tasman for the New Zealand Championship this weekend.
