The Speedway season is rapidly drawing to a close, with just three meetings remaining at Gillman after the Speedway Manager, David Parker, announced last week that the season would end on 13 March with a special benefit meeting for injured South Australian Sidecar Champions Mick Headland and Paul Waters.
Ironically it is less than twelve months ago that Headland and Waters were the instigators of a benefit meeting for Queensland sidecars passenger Mick Ing, who, like Headland and Waters, was badly injured in a track crash in New Zealand.
"We are hoping to attract a top class field to make it a big night for Mick and Paul" said Parker. "They deserve it, they strongly support the sport here in Australia, and have helped a lot of other riders."
Within an hour of announcing the meeting would take place, Parker had nominations from five-times Australian Champion Darrin Treloar, four-times Australian Champion Glenn O'Brien, current Australian Champion Mark Mitchell and Australia number 3, Rick Howse. (Treloar is the current Australia number two).
Any riders who want to take part should contact Parker on 0403 364 658 (or email dave [at]gillmanspeedway.com) as soon as possible as he wants to finalise the field to allow a few weeks to publicise the event.
In the meantime, nominations close this Sunday for the next Gillman meeting, the Gillman Sidecar Masters, which will be held on 13 February. A this early stage Glenn O'Brien looks to be the early favourite as Treloar will miss this one because of a clash with the New Zealand Championship.
The other meeting for this season will feature the South Australian Quad Championship on 27 February. Nominations close with the last mail on Friday, 19 February and the Supp regs and Entry Form can be downloaded from the Gillman Speedway website nominations page.
