Deposed national champions Darrin Treloar and passenger Justin Plaisted struck a psychological blow over their rivals in the lead-up to this season’s Australian Speedway Sidecar Championship by winning the Suzuki of Newcastle Sidecar Masters at the Newcastle Showground Speedway yesterday (January 26).
Treloar and Plaisted were unbeaten throughout their five heat races and then won the A Final, but only after a tough battle to get past Newcastle star Grant Bond and passenger Glen Cox who were then relegated to third place by reigning national champions Mark Mitchell and passenger Tom Golding.
Treloar was quick to acknowledge that he knows that Mitchell and Bond are always going to be hard to beat and he also expects there will be a strong Queensland contingent heading to the Australian Championship meeting at Newcastle Showground on Easter Saturday.
Several other local teams performed well in the Masters with Darren Café and passenger Don Morris winning the B Final ahead of Sydney duo Phil Hudson and passenger Mark Griffiths while young guns James Hinton and passenger Blake Cox finished third.
The supporting Quad events provided fans with some variety with Paul Worth beating Gavin Pennell and Michael Roycroft in the final.
