Despite his young age – 19 – Witches newcomer Linus Sundstrom is more experienced than most riders his own age having ridden since the age of 5 when he received a speedway bike for his birthday.
Like his hero Tony Rickardsson (who also made his British elite league debut with Ipswich), linus grew up in the small town of Avesta and also like Rickardsson, chose speedway over ice hockey, another sport at which he excels.
Linus has already tasted success, winning the under-19 world cup with Sweden in 2008 and the Scandinavian under-19 individual title in 2009. He was also voted rider of the year in his native Sweden in 2008.
His sights are firmly fixed on breaking into the grand prix series in a bid to become the latest in a long line of Swedish world champions. As well as doubling up with Ipswich, Linus faces a busy 2010 riding for Rye House in the Premier League , Piraterna in Sweden and Start Gniezno in Poland. He sees riding in England as the key to progressing in his chosen sport –
"I think british speedway is different to the rest of the world. It is a very tough school but a neccessary one if you want to become a top rider. As far as the country itself is concerned, i think there are too many people living on a small island! But i must say that british speedway supporters are the best in the world. I just love the fact that you can see all sorts of people on the terraces, from babes in arms to grannies – that really fascinates me.”
