Birmingham Monarchs Cycle Speedway season ended with more silverware at the recent British Indoor Championships in Manchester.
In the Under 19 team event the Monarchs tracked the British Under 19 outdoor champion Paul Heard alongside new signing and British Under 16 champion Ben Mould. Scottish number 1 Nathan Groves and top England rider Chris Timms made up the team with Adam Lamb travelling as reserve.
In their semi final they rode sensibly, all riders getting used to the indoor surface, to finish in 2nd place behind local rivals Sandwell who seemed to feel that having beaten favourites Birmingham in this round their job was done.
However come the final, also featuring teams from Stockport and Hethersett, the Monarchs simply raised their game winning the meeting with 4 races left, comfortably seeing off Sandwell into the runners up slot.
The day was complete when all 4 members of the team qualified for the Under 19 Individual Final where they had varying degrees of success. Ben managed 10 points, Paul won the 3 races he finished, unfortunately being excluded somewhat dubiously in his other two, Nathan scored a creditable 14, but Chris Timms swept everyone before him to add the Indoor British Title to the Outdoor version he won in 2008 leaving Birmingham with three different Individual British Champions in 2009 – a truly outstanding achievement!
