It’s becoming a dream season for Christchurch’s Grant Tregoning. The Oreti Speedway contracted rider won the Golden Bib from Andrew Aldridge and Alex Cunningham.
Dale Finch also made the final. Tregoning won all his qualifying heats and joined Aldridge and Finch straight into the final. Cunningham had a busy day at the office coming into the final through the last chance semi heat. Aldridge must have been disappointed because for the first time in two meetings, he had the jump out of the gates on his rival and friend. Running a different engine this week, Aldridge appeared to have more power and we were in for an exciting race to see if he could control the outcome from the front while Tregoning attacked. Unfortunately behind them Finch fell and Cunningham put in an outstandingly high speed drop instantaneously.
It earn’t the comment from a fellow competitor “love to have Alex behind me if I fell”. While he made contact with Finch, it was gentle because of his efforts. The rerun saw Tregoning gain the ascendancy from the gate this time but he was busy as Aldridge threw everything at him. Inside, outside he tried chasing some dirt but Tregoning held on to take the flag. Aldridge has stated that he sees Tregoning as his main opposition locally this season. Nobody would question that statement so far this season.
Sidecar racing was full on and entertaining. Withdrawals in this class caused a problem with the draws for heat racing. The final lost some of its impact when John Warwood and Laurie McMahon were put back 30 for a tape infringement. They rode like devils possessed and came from behind to finish second behind Nelson’s Dallas Coleman and Adie Drake. They won all their heats and it was only Warwood who got close to them.
The rest entertained with some fierce battles through the qualifying heats. Liam Stockman and Blair Lock made it through to collect third while Paul Anderson and Mike Stephenson won the B final earning a start off the back of the final and eventually finished fourth.
Shilo Tocker won the juniors from Biannon Coppard and Paleti Woods. Anothony Knowles and Jack McRae displayed their abilities on the 250’s while the ATV’s again entertained with three new riders fronting for this one. Lorne Kirk was the only one to upset Tim George with Ian Hammond and Bob Utteridge mixing it in.
