Grant Tregoning won his second Burt Munro Trophy after a solid display of riding. He went through the event unbeaten fighting off the challenges from the rest of the field but was never really troubled.
Seasoned riders John Tuffley and Larry Ross both struck problems that ended their chances for a podium placing. John Ross was all set to force a run off for the minor spots if he won his final heat. While leading, Ross came down on a well weathered track ending his run. Dale Finch and Andrew Aldridge were tied on 13 points and the run off saw Finch start from the inside gate to claim the first turn. He maintained his composer and raced tidily on the slick inside line while Aldridge chased the dirt.
Finch must be in with a good chance at the NZ Under 21’s in December. Aldridge’s main attempt came from a wide outside run on the last lap as he looked to gain on Finch but hit a rut coming out of the turn which took him off line and the opportunity was lost. At this meeting his bike did not appear to have the power of the others. Tregoning however remains the man to beat riding well on a strong bike. The overseas experience showed and it was great to see Aldridge acknowledge his win when they met in the heats.
It’s been a great run for the seasoned campaigners in the sidecar class. The NZ Short Track Champions and local combination, Fraser Gillespie and David Uitentuis won the Munro Trophy in the final by beating the 2NZ combination of Russell Stuart and Andy Parker from Hastings. Stuart was quick but did not have it all his own way down south. He could not match Gillespie who once again only made the final with a win in the final repercharge sneaking him into the final. Brent Tomkins and Nigel Cuckow finished third. Cuckow was the third swinger Tomkins had used in the event after starting off with Arnie Marshall then Darryn Fox. The sidecar racing was entertaining and the NZ Champs here next year will be worth watching. Aiden Thwaites and Bruce McLean were fourth home with Jamie Pocklington and Daniel Gillett fifth.
Auckland’s Chopper Bagshaw won the support class from Oreti’s Mathew Heenan and Aron McIntyre. The Classics were entertaining with an overfull field with one starting from behind. Pete Stenning won with a maximum after powering the Joe Hughes owned bike out wide in the dirt on the turns in each event chopping the field up. Nelson’s Graham Wedlock took second from the youngster, Ryan Terry- Daly from Auckland. Conner Spriggs won the juniors from Peleti Woods from Christchurch and the local boy Hayden Sims. B grade juniors saw a close run with a single point separating Adam Shuttleworth from Zane Pay.
