The biggest news of the speedway season thus far broke today when Gillman Speedway Manager, Dave Parker announced he had completed arrangements for four times Australian Sidecar Champions Glenn and Nathan O’Brien to return to racing on a regular basis at the Adelaide track.
Parker said: “I speak to Glenn quite regularly and a few things he had mentioned in the past few months, led me to believe that there was a chance for a return to racing. So the Speedway Riders’ Association President, Tony Cox and I discussed the possibility, came up with a few ideas and the rest is history: the O’Briens are back!”
Glenn and Nathan dominated Sidecar racing for quite a number of years and because of the good working relationship with Gillman Speedway and the many friends and fans they have here, Adelaide is like a second home to the O’Briens.
“Yes, that is correct” Glenn said this morning, “Dave, Bob White and many others in Adelaide have always made my whole team feel welcome and they are like an extended family to us and we all still keep in touch. Also, Wayne and Sheryn Miller from Classic Hire are enthusiastic to once again back the O’Brien Brothers racing team, and we have managed to snare the expertise of Mark ‘Slim’ Brady”.
O’Brien continued: “We want to base ourselves at Gillman as they have the best track and management and also, where else can you ride every two weeks against Darrin Treloar (five time Australian Champion), Mark Mitchell (current Australian Champion) and Mick Headland (World Champion). So obviously Gillman is the best place for us to set the team up. I believe things have changed for the better in Speedway Sidecars. They’re faster and the teams more professional, but the bike technology hasn’t changed much so I can’t see any problem with dialing in, and then all I have to do is get on pace and hopefully give these guys a bit of a shake-up”.
The O’Briens have set some goals and they hope that by the new year, they will be on track fully prepared. “We are freshening up our #1 bike that took the team to four Australian Championship wins, and are looking at a deal for another bike as we speak.
We would like to negotiate with potential sponsors on the east coast as that is where we will be based. The rest is up to Nathan and me. We are both very exited about our return and can be contacted on gobcobra @ bigpond.com. Bring it on!”
Thanks to Dave Parker.
