All eyes of the motor sport world will be on Hertfordshire on Sunday (11/10) when Hoddesdon's Rye House Stadium welcomes the newly-crowned world's fastest man ever on two wheels - in action at the Short Track UK championships.
The Short Track series (of which this is the seventh and final championship round of 2009) is the British equivalent of American Flat Track - the most popular form of motor cycle racing Stateside; and Chris Carr is the discipline's all-time greatest ever rider. Seven-times national champion, the Californian-born Carr will be taking on Europe's best in this new departure for the famous Rye House track - home to Speedway since the 1930s.
And Carr motors in from the States on a flying visit (Rye House is his ONLY racing appearance on these shores) having just two weeks ago, re-claimed the World Land Speed Record - blasting through the 365 mph barrier on his BUB Racing Streamliner Seven at the famous Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah to set a new benchmark of an incredible 367.38 mph!*
HM Plant Honda-mounted on Sunday, Carr will be taking on series leader, Peter Boast (a one-time World Ice Racing rostrum finisher), 2008 double UK and European champion Marco Belli, his fellow Italian Luca Tallamona, Dutch master Helbe Scheper and familiar names to the Speedway-going public at Rye House, Rusty Hodgson and current series runner-up, Aidan Collins (nephew of former World Speedway champion, Peter Collins).
The action will see races of up to 12 riders per heat racing over distances of six to 12 laps on a variety of machines ranging from 125cc up to 1000cc monsters - the larger multi-cylindered bikes having their own class, the Thunderbikes competition. Seeing such large machines powersliding around the confines of the Rye House track should be an awesome sight!
The concluding round of the national STUK championship series (in its fifth year now) will see both the national Pozzani/Silkolene Short Track and Red Max Thunderbikes titles decided. The meeting is the first time this particular discipline - officially the fastest growing motorcycle sport in Europe - has been staged in the Herts/Beds/Essex area and a large crowd is expected. Also on a packed bill of fare will be two more classes: the CCM Junior Short Track championship - including Saffron Walden youngster Flynn Scott and the Mini-bikes.
A further attraction will be the guest racing appearance of one of Britain's top emerging young motorcycling talents: Lewis Bridger, 9th. in last week's World Under-21 Speedway championship.
Plenty of local interest in such a cosmopolitan field too - including the experienced Thunderbikes star, Tim Stevens from Knebworth, fellow Herts riders Mike Ryan from St. Albans and Lez Stevens from Royston; with Essex represented by the Scotts, Russell from Ongar and Saffron Walden's Paul - father of young Flynn. If recovered from recent injury, the local Rye House Rockets' favourite, Andrew Silver intends also to compete.
The gates open 11.00am, when practice also starts and the opening heat (of a full 28 race programme) is at 1.00pm Admission: Adults £10, Concessions £8, Juniors (12-15 years) £3, Children 11 and under FREE.
Venue address is: Rye House Speedway, Rye Road, Hoddesdon, Herts, EN11 0EH
