The Falcons 2009 Northern League came to a premature end on Sunday (27th Sep) as the scheduled arrival of the 6 man Heckmondwike side to Redbraes never materialised.
The Yorkshire outfit having communicated days before that only two riders could make the journey to Scotland. A scratch challenge match being hastily arranged in its place. This news in conjunction with the news from Bury that they were yet again unable to fulfil a fixture away from home against Edinburgh (4th Oct) brought to an end what was in reality a very disappointing 2009 League campaign, not in terms of results but in terms of matches ridden and the severe lack of competitive action at Redbraes.
With both Heckmondwike and Bury unable to fulfil fixtures at Edinburgh and the consequences this has had on the profile of the sport and interest within the capital there is now a real threat that the current structure of the Northern League itself is called into question and with it the future of competitive league action for the Falcons. It would be no surprise if Stoke were to move to the Premier League on a permanent basis next season, Heckmondwike struggling to fulfil all fixtures, not just those at Edinburgh, and with the reluctance of Bury to travel to Edinburgh means that league restructure surely cannot be avoided.
What part Edinburgh play next season remains to be seen and a great deal of soul searching will be needed over the close season.
