Birmingham Monarchs cycle speedway club continued their best season in years by wrapping up the Midland League with a stunning away victory at Leicester.

The 94  - 85 success means that with only two matches left the Monarchs are in with a realistic chance of racing the whole season unbeaten – their remaining Midland League fixtures being the return match at Perry Hall Park against Leicester on Sunday 26th September and an away match at bottom of the table East Park (Wolverhampton).

The victory however was anything but easy with Leicester fielding world number 3 Lucasz Nowacki along with 4 other regular internationals, and they started the brighter and still led the match with only 5 of the 18 races left. However first Birmingham riders Carl Winwood and Nathan Groves raced away for a maximum race win in heat 14 and then veteran Paul Timms and British Under 19 champion Paul Heard repeated the feat in the next race to swing the match very much in the Monarchs favour.

With the momentum very much in Birmingham’s favour wily team manager Phil Widdas sent out first Chris Timms and then Paul Heard with instructions to sew up the victory – and exactly as at Norwich the weekend before in the British Open Club Championship, the two youngsters delivered the goods.

Finally the trophy haul may not be finished there – in The Premier League the first team currently lie in third place with 3 matches to go and the Combination team sit on top of the pile and know that victories in the two home Premier matches against Great Blakenham (20th September) and Leicester (18th October – note this is a premier league match. Leicester also visit in September for the Midland League). Also on an individual front the British Finals come to the Midlands  this weekend with several Monarchs riders trying to qualify for the Final on Monday 31st – Birmingham stage one of the British Semi finals in Perry Hall Park this Sunday 30th with free admission – racing starts at 1pm.
