The Pozzani/Silkolene Short Track UK dirt track motorcycling series makes a high-flying return to the Norfolk Arena in King’s Lynn next Sunday 9th. August, 1pm start time - with the annual staging of the TT event.
This event is completely unique to Speedway tracks in the UK combining the US-style dirttrack racing that Short Track UK and the Norfolk Arena are famous for - with right-hand turns and five feet plus jumps added into the racing mix!
The fifth round of this year’s title race (one which began at King’s Lynn back in May) is the one most speed fans look forward to the most: dirt track racing’s version of the steeplechase!
The term TT has several connotations in British sport – especially within the motorcycling fraternity: famous mostly for the 100-plus years of the Tourist Trophy races on the Isle of Man. The other common use of these initials is for Time Trial. However, neither are the meaning for the TT on show at the Arena on Sunday. The Short Track TT stands for Track and Trail – an integral part of this American style sport. Flat Track in the US comprises four main disciplines: oval flat circuit racing known as Short Track; the same but for multi-cylindered larger bikes known as Grand National Twins; the Half-mile (here in the UK raced on a trotting track in Amman Valley deep in the Welsh coal mining country – on a cinder circuit which makes Saddlebow look like a proverbial tiddler!); and the Track and Trail – combing normal Short Track with jumps.
So on Sunday it’s “time for TT” as the series competitors prepare to get up, up and away!
Heading the pack going into Sunday’s event is one-time Speedway rider, Adie Collins, nephew of the legendary Peter Collins, World Speedway champion in 1976. Collins junior has seized with both hands (with two round wins so far this term) the opportunity afforded by the enforced absence of three times national champ and perennial winner at the Norfolk Arena, the Italian Marco Belli, out injured after crashing in last month’s European championship. Star guest on Sunday is a rider very familiar to the Saddlebow circuit (albeit in flatter circumstances!), one time King’s Lynn Star and last year skipper of the Boston Barracudas’ side which so narrowly won Speedway’s Conference League in the Boston club’s last year as tenants at the Norfolk Arena, Simon Lambert.
Meanwhile, there’s four-wheeled action too: courtesy of the Welbourns of Wisbech Short Track Quads: an event is unique for this type of four-wheeled racing on dirt track ovals in that six machines line up in a grid-style start at the tapes making for fast and furious action and a lot of passing.
The Quads form just one of a remarkable FIVE championships being contested in what is one of the most action and value-packed afternoons on the Norfolk Arena calendar.
Back again in 2009 is the ACU-backed CCM-sponsored junior competition (with a new champ guaranteed, as Burton’s Tom Woolley is now in the seniors.
Former King’s Lynn and Boston Speedway rider and many times ironically, an Isle of Man TT competitor, Peter Boast from Lincolnshire defends the Redmax Thunderbikes (Twins) crown: the event for the larger multi-cylindered machines which sees truly monstrously-sized bikes up to 1200ccs, thrown into the tight bends of the King’s Lynn circuit in a spectacle not to be missed.
From the big boys to the mini bikes, an added attraction this term is a new class: Mini-bike Short Track involving machines around the 160cc.
The admission is £10.00 for adults, £8.00 for pensioners and other concessions; with children aged 12 to 15 years of age, £3 and younger than 12 (provided accompanied by an adult) having free admission. The action gets underway at 1pm.
