The Ohio Speedway Long Track Championship draws a full field of Speedway riders from the midwest to compete on the limestone half mile. Among them will be the reigning champion Chad Rall (Mansfield,Ohio) and his father Ronnie Rall (AMA Hall of Famer) along with the 2007 champion John Debats (Mich). Michael Callen (Mich) and Chris Hathaway (Indiana) were in the 2008 A Main and are looking for a good result in the 2009 Championship. The Weicht brothers Dan and Dave from Indiana, and the father and son team of Jon and Sean Massie from Wooster Ohio are competing for the title. Marc Monroe from Tallmadge Ohio will be returning to the track after he suffered a broken collar bone in Canton Ohio at the AMA/USA Speedway Long Track National Championship. See Ohio roster below for a complete list of all the Speedway riders.
The motorcycles used for speedway are not remotely like any machine you will ever see on the roads. They have acceleration on par with a Formula One racing car, but rather surprisingly have NO BRAKES, rear suspension or gears. For the technically minded, the engines are 500 cc single cylinder four valve, four strokes with air cooling. Methanol is used instead of gasoline to enable them to run at very high compression ratios. To sum it up - the speedway motorcycles accelerate from zero to 60 mph in less than 3 seconds, are fueled by alcohol, and have NO BRAKES.
The format used for the Ohio Championship begins with a series of heat races and a last chance qualifier. Then points are added up placing riders in two semi finals that transfer riders to A, B, and C Main Events.
Former Speedway Ice Racing World Champion Scotty Brown and the Bike Days Motorcycle Club organize the Ohio Speedway Long Track Championship and the Antique Motorcycle Races in Wauseon on Friday, July 17th. They also hold "Bike Days" in Canton, Ohio over Memorial Weekend in May that features the AMA/USA Speedway Long Track National Championship along with a two day swap meet and flat track racing. The History Channel will be on hand filming at the Wauseon National Antique Motorcycle Races.
