Something different for motor sports this weekend up at Buxton’s Hi Edge Raceway with a second visit to the Peaks of Europe’s fastest growing motorcycling discipline, the Pozzani/Silkolene Short Track UK championship (Sunday 12 July 1pm start time).
The USA style dirt-track motorcycling series travels all across England and Wales on a range of racing ovals to crown no fewer than five national champions; and last August delivered the goods with some spectacular racing on the Speedway circuit at Hi Edge. Winner that time around, former Hitmen rider Adie Collins is back chasing the national championship title this term, his second as a full-time Short-tracker. With championship leader and three times STUK overall champ, the Italian Marco Belli out injured after crashing in last weekend’s European championship, Sunday represents a glorious opportunity for the chasing pack including Collins and Derbyshire youngster Tom Woolley to close the gap. Woolley from Burton is the reigning STUK Junior champ (having been unbeaten for two years in that class) and was the inaugural ACU Junior Flattrack Champ last year. The 16-year-old who has ridden second halves on the Buxton circuit has moved up with some distinction this season into the seniors and Sunday represents a great chance for local fans to check out the progress of arguably the county’s most promising-ever young motorcycling racing talent.
Meanwhile there’s four-wheeled action too: courtesy of the Welbourns of Wisbech Short Track Quads: an event is unique for this type of four-wheeled racing on dirt track ovals in that six machines line up in a grid-style start at the tapes making for fast and furious action and a lot of passing. Local interest here takes the attractive shape of the sport’s premier female competitor Chesterfield’s Mandy Renshaw – a regular rostrum-challenger even though pitched in against the nation’s top men at this discipline. Friendly domestic rivalry on one front here with Mandy’s partner, Mark Ramsdale being a major competitor too. The pair are sponsored by CMC of Chesterfield.
The Quads form just one of a remarkable FIVE championships being contested in what is one of the most action and value-packed afternoons on the Hi Edge calendar. Ensuring that the Woolley family name could yet still retain its undefeated record in the CCM-sponsored Junior Short Track championship will be Tom’s younger brother, Sam. Woolley junior won the last round and is in pole position going into Sunday’s event.
Former World Ice Racing third-place man and many times Isle of Man TT competitor, Peter Boast from Lincolnshire defends the Redmax Thunderbikes crown (the event for the larger multi-cylindered machines which sees truly monstrously-sized bikes up to 1200ccs, thrown into the tight bends of the Hi Edge circuit in a spectacle not to be missed), facing the largest and most-talented field yet in this fastest-growing of all the disciplines. The US equivalent of the Thunderbikes, the GN Twins has been the breeding ground for some of the biggest legends in motorcycling history, riders like Kenny Roberts and Nicky Hayden – no wonder then that a hugely-talented speed-merchant like one-time Elite League Speedway star and a national champ on the grass, Lincoln’s Andrew Moore is devoted his 2009 racing to success in this discipline.
From the big boys to the mini bikes, an added attraction this term is a new class: Mini-bike Short Track involving machines around the 160cc. Buxton-born Speedway racer, the hugely popular one-time Hitman, Adam Allott is turning his hand to these small machines on Sunday – another big attraction for local speed fans.
The admission is £10.00 for adults, £8.00 for pensioners and other concessions; with children aged 12 to 15 years of age, £3 and younger than 12 (provided accompanied by an adult) having free admission. The action gets underway at 1pm
