The Henderson Insurance Scunthorpe Scorpions are hoping to bring the high-flying Workington Comets down to earth at the Eddie Wright Raceway on Friday night.
The Cumbrian side are three points clear at the top of the Premier League table and have picked up a league point in all but one of their nine league matches but club promoter, Rob Godfrey, firmly believes his side can claim all three points. “Workington have three riders who haven’t ridden a Premier League meeting on our track and whilst we are without Magnus Karlsson we have Ben Wilson in as guest and he top-scored for Redcar with sixteen points in our last home match”.
“Magnus needs to be with his partner as she is due to give birth to their child but Ben won four races for the Bears and that is the sort of form we hope he can produce on Friday. Workington have an incredible top end with Kevin Doolan, Adrian Rymel and Andre Compton but they are using rider replacement for Charles Wright and his rides can only be taken by Richard Lawson, John Branney and Craig Cook. Those three have to have at least sixteen rides between them so if we can defeat their top three a few times and avoid most of the last places we can bag all three points. It is certainly set to be another great meeting and hopefully we’ll come out on top”.
At the same time as the Scorpions face Workington the Jotun Paints Scunthorpe Saints National League side will be three hundred miles away facing the Plymouth Devils. With James Sarjeant injured, Richard Franklin unavailable and Simon Lambert in action for the Scorpions the side will give new signing John MacPhail another outing at reserve and use Rye House’s Rob Smith as a guest.

Fixture amendments
Further to yesterday’s fixture amendments another Scorpions’ fixture has been agreed today. The Stoke Potters, who were due to visit the Eddie Wright Raceway on Friday 10th July, will now come seven days later on Friday 17th July (start time 7.30pm).
A date has also been set for the second leg of the National League Knockout Cup Quarter-final between the Saints side and the King’s Lynn Barracudas. It will take place at the Norfolk Arena on Friday 31st July (start time 7.30pm), seven days after the first leg in Scunthorpe.
The latest amendments leaves the club with three fixtures to slot into their schedule:
Home v Newport (Premier League)
Home v Berwick (Premier League)
Home v Newport (National League)
It is anticipated the Newport fixtures will be a double-header but the situation will be complicated further if the Scorpions and Saints can progress in the Knockout Cups and Premier Trophy competitions later this month.
Quantum of Shale author present
Friday night’s Premier League meeting between the Scorpions and Workington sees acclaimed author Jeff Scott at the Eddie Wright Raceway to sign copies of his recently released speedway book, Quantum of Shale.
It is Scott’s take on the 2008 speedway season when he, once again, visited every speedway track in the country. There are all the usual quirky characters, strange happenings and bluntly expressed opinions whilst five chapters feature Scunthorpe meetings.
Quantum of Shale joins Jeff Scott’s other critically acclaimed works on British Speedway: Showered in Shale, When Eagles Dared, Shifting Shale, Shale Britannia, along with Concrete for Breakfast, nominated for the 2009 British Sports Book of the year (Biography section) and signed copies of the 328-page book are available for £20 on Friday night.
